Jerry Jones is outraged over the NFL’s decision to pass on Shedeur Sanders in the draft. After the former Colorado star slipped to the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys owner was quick to praise the young quarterback and question why teams overlooked him for so long.
The Sanders saga began well before draft day. The former Buffaloes quarterback finished his college career as one of the top prospects, but as the weeks went by, his stock declined, and by draft day, his fate was among the most uncertain of the elite candidates.
Rumors of character flaws and poor interviews with team executives severely damaged Sanders’ reputation. Scouting reports highlighted issues such as inconsistent rhythm, a weaker-than-expected arm for an NFL starter, and below-average size for a professional quarterback.
The first three rounds of the draft passed without a single team calling the son of legendary cornerback Deion Sanders, sparking outrage from Jones, who claimed Cowboys scouts had graded Shedeur highly before the draft.
“Shedeur has the blood of a champion”
After the draft day snub, Jones took a veiled swipe at the NFL, saying, “I know what a winner has in his bloodline,” implying that teams ignored Sanders’ family legacy-including his father, Deion, a Super Bowl champion with the Cowboys in 1995.
Jones dismissed concerns over Shedeur’s character by referencing his longtime relationship with Deion and claiming firsthand knowledge of the young quarterback’s integrity. “I know where the character is. Boy, it’s a great character. It’s an unbelievable, competitive character for sports.”
The Cowboys owner assured that if any team reached out, he’d be happy to vouch for Shedeur. “If calls come my way, they’ll get firsthand knowledge of my life with him [Deion] over the last 20 years. I’m a big believer in the character of the Sanders family.”
The bottom line
Despite Jones’ endorsement, one undeniable fact remains: Dallas didn’t select the Colorado standout either. Before the draft, the team signed Joe Milton as a backup to Dak Prescott, and with their first three picks, they opted for guard Tyler Booker, linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku, and cornerback Shavon Revel Jr.
Now the lingering question remains: Can Sanders pull a Tom Brady, going from draft day disappointment to one of the greatest quarterbacks in history? We’ll know the answer in a couple of decades.
