Jerry Jeudy expresses frustration as Shedeur Sanders named Browns starting QB

The Cleveland Browns’ decision to hand the offense to rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders has sparked a noticeable shift in the demeanor of veteran wideout Jerry Jeudy, whose unusually terse comments this week reflected a growing sense of frustration.

Instead of his typical candor, Jeudy offered clipped, minimal answers about working with Sanders, a tone that suggested far more tension beneath the surface than the team has publicly acknowledged.

Jeudy acknowledged that this week is “going to be very important” in building rapport with Sanders.

Asked whether he’s seen growth from the young quarterback, he replied simply: “He’s consistently growing.”

On the question of how quickly that chemistry can come together, Jeudy summed it up in four words: “You just need reps.”

It wasn’t just the brevity of his comments that stood out. Reporters noted how markedly different this interview felt from Jeudy‘s usual openness.

According to one beat reporter, “It was unlike Jerry Jeudy, who is typically a guy who talks good or bad, win or lose.”

Browns’ wider QB drama raises questions

This is not the first time Jeudy has publicly acknowledged discomfort with the Browns‘ ever-shifting quarterback picture.

Earlier in training camp, with four quarterbacks, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders, taking turns under center, Jeudy pointed out how difficult it is for any receiver to build rhythm in that environment.

“You want to always build that relationship with a quarterback and have that consistency throughout the years,” he said. “But … you just got to learn how to adjust no matter what.”

He also made it clear that he tries not to let the situation affect his approach. “I got no control over that. Whoever the coaching staff chooses, I’m just gonna make sure to make their job easier when they throw me the ball.”

Still, that philosophy has been tested repeatedly. Jeudy has already caught passes from six different quarterbacks in his career despite being just 27 years old.

Analysts across the NFL have raised similar concerns. Aaron Goldhammer described Sanders‘s situation in Cleveland as “weird, strange and dysfunctional,” pointing to the lack of consistent practice reps and the rapid escalation from backup to starter.

The broader instability has made it nearly impossible for the Browns to establish the kind of offensive identity that can withstand midseason turbulence.

There’s also the reality of how Sanders‘s debut unfolded. After Dillon Gabriel exited with a concussion, Sanders took the field and completed only 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards, threw an interception, and lost a fumble.

Sanders admitted afterward that timing and familiarity were issues, saying, “I think it’s a lot of things we need to look at during the week and go and just get comfortable. Throwing routes with Jerry, throwing routes with all those guys. I think that was my first ball to him all year.”
