Jazz Chisholm has not forgotten what Miguel Rojas did to him: “Neither a good person nor a good player”

Bahamian baseball player Jazz Chisholm Jr. has once again sparked controversy by recalling an episode that marked his time with the Miami Marlins: the alleged humiliation he suffered at the hands of Venezuelan player Miguel Rojas.

Chisholm said that during his debut in 2020 he arrived with a collection of 20 pairs of custom spikes, designed and paid for by himself, each with a story behind it: from references to video games such as GTA: Vice City to nods to the anime Black Clover, even on Oreo cookies. But, he said, his creativity was not well received by some veterans. Among them was Miguel Rojas, who reportedly cut one of the pairs with scissors, and filled another with milk, completely ruining it. An act that, according to Chisholm, marked the beginning of a hostile environment in the Marlins’ locker room.

In a recent interview, Chisholm was blunt: “I was already a leader without being told. But the veterans… you can’t be a leader when you have guys who have been there for nine or 10 years, even if they don’t perform anymore. They call them captains, but they are not good captains, nor good people, nor good athletes”.

The 27-year-old also expressed that these behaviors discourage new generations:

After that incident, then-manager Don Mattingly had to step in, holding a nearly 90-minute meeting to calm things down and get the team back on track. However, Chisholm decided to distance himself and focus on his own style and performance.

A talent that shines far from Miami

Far from fading away, the Dominican reinvented himself in New York, where his charisma and performance have made him one of the most complete players in the American League. His recent Silver Slugger award confirms him as the best offensive second baseman of the season, surpassing Brandon Lowe and Jorge Polanco.

Even so, his future with the Yankees is uncertain, as rumors of a possible change of team continue to swirl. Many fans wonder whether it would be a mistake to let go of a talent who, in addition to power at the plate, brings energy and authenticity to the clubhouse.

Will Jazz Chisholm Jr. get a salary increase after his historic year with the Yankees?

After an outstanding season that included reaching the prestigious 30-30 club (more than 30 home runs and more than 30 stolen bases) and winning the Silver Slugger award, Chisholm has a key decision ahead of him. His current contract has him under club control and his salary is expected to rise considerably, with estimates that it could reach $10.2 million for the next campaign.
