Jaylen Waddle’s 2025 opportunity: can he reclaim the spotlight in Miami?

Jaylen Waddle has a lot to prove in 2025. After an underwhelming 2024 season, theMiami Dolphins wide receiver is gearing up to reclaim a prominent role in the offense. Miami had high hopes when they extended Waddle’s contract in 2024, but last year’s disappointing performance has left questions about his future as the team’s top receiving option.

In 2021, Waddle set an NFL rookie record with 104 receptions, and his 2022 season saw him lead the league in receiving average (18.1 yards per reception). However, 2023 marked a significant dip in production as Waddle struggled with injuries and fell to fourth in the pecking order behind Tyreek Hill, Jonnu Smith, and De’Von Achane.

The potential void left by Hill

The uncertainty surrounding Tyreek Hill’s future only adds pressure to Waddle’s 2025 season. If Hill’s off-field issues lead to a trade or his departure, Waddle could be Miami’s No. 1 receiver once again. Hill’s absence would open the door for Waddle to assume the lead role in the Dolphins’ passing attack, a role he thrived in before the influx of other weapons.

Though Waddle’s numbers in 2024 were far from stellar (58 catches for 744 yards and two touchdowns), his potential remains undeniable. The Dolphins’ offense averaged seven fewer points per game in 2024, signaling a decline in overall efficiency. Re-establishing balance and ensuring that their top playmakers are involved will be crucial to the offense’s success.

Waddle’s past performances offer hope

While his 2024 season was disappointing, Waddle did show flashes of his former self when Hill was sidelined with an injury. In a late-season game against the Jets, Waddle caught 8 of 9 targets for 142 yards and a touchdown, proving that when given the opportunity, he can still dominate. With Hill’s status uncertain, Waddle may get more chances to show what he can do as the primary receiving threat.

Miami’s offense and the need for balance

The Dolphins’ offense has had its ups and downs, especially with the emergence of other players like Achane and Smith. However, Waddle remains one of the most explosive weapons in their arsenal. If Miami can get their offense back to its high-flying ways of 2022 and 2023, Waddle’s ability to stretch the field and make plays after the catch will be vital.

In 2025, Waddle will need to prove that the investment in him was worth it. With a top-tier quarterback like Tua Tagovailoa and a revamped offense, it’s time for the Dolphins to fully unleash the potential of their star receiver.
