Jaylen Brown opens up after Celtics’ early exit: “I’m still decompressing emotionally”

For the first time in four years, the Boston Celtics are not among the Eastern Conference finalists, a surprising and bitter reality for a team that has been a constant postseason force. After three straight trips to the conference finals and two NBA Finals appearances in the past three seasons, the Celtics fell to the New York Knicks in the second round, in a series few expected them to lose.

Among those still reeling from the loss is star guard Jaylen Brown, who offered candid insight into his emotional state and what might lie ahead in an exclusive interview with Celtics CLNS reporter Noa Dalzell.

Brown reflects on the emotional toll

“Right now, I’m decompressing emotionally,” Brown admitted. “In a week or so, I’ll pick up the pieces.” He spoke openly about using this time to reevaluate his next steps, both personally and professionally. “I see what the direction is for myself, my health, and the organization. And, whatever the outcome is, I’m excited.”

Brown’s words highlight the sting of a postseason that ended far earlier than expected. Boston entered the playoffs as one of the favorites to win it all, finishing the regular season as the East’s No. 2 seed. But despite a dominant first-round showing, the Celtics were stunned by a resilient Knicks squad, who erased double-digit deficits in Games 1 and 2 on Boston’s home court.

Battling through injury and disappointment

Brown played through a lingering knee issue that affected his mobility and rhythm, though he still posted strong numbers. In 11 playoff games, the 2022 Finals MVP averaged 22.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, and nearly 4 assists per game. He shot 44.1% from the field and logged over 36 minutes per night, a testament to his toughness despite the physical setback.

Still, the early exit has cast doubt on Boston’s trajectory. With the offseason underway, speculation is swirling about potential roster changes, and Brown’s role in the team’s future is far from certain.

What’s next for Boston, and Brown?

As the Celtics enter what could be a transformative offseason, all eyes are on how the organization responds to its surprising collapse. For Brown, the road ahead is both unknown and full of possibilities.

Whatever comes next, one thing is clear: the heartbreak is still fresh, and the healing has just begun.
