Jaydon Blue impresses Cowboys coaches: could he be the starting RB in 2025?

The Dallas Cowboys may have stumbled through 2024 with one of the league’s weakest rushing attacks, but rookie running back Jaydon Blue is turning heads in training camp and forcing coaches to rethink their depth chart.

Acquired in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the former Texas Longhorn is already taking first-team reps and raising expectations inside team drills.

Selected at No. 149 overall, Blue entered a crowded backfield featuring veterans Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, both brought in during the offseason, and fellow rookie Phil Mafah.

While Sanders and Williams took most first-team reps early on, buzz around Blue‘s explosive speed and receiving skill set has rapidly elevated his standing among the coaching staff.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer has been effusive in his praise for Blue.

During a recent media session, head coach Brian Schottenheimer couldn’t hide his enthusiasm.

On his development, he said: “I think in the spring, he picked it up slower than we had hoped. But not now. He’s got it. He’s figuring it out. He’s one of those guys that doesn’t say much, but there’s a bigtime competitive fire in there.”

Schottenheimer elaborated further: “Yeah, the speed, the dynamic playmaking ability. I think he’s a dualthreat guy. I think you can hand him the ball. He doesn’t need a lot of space to make people miss, and his acceleration is uncanny. I mean, his ability to get to top speed is unique.”

He added, “He’s just, he’s such a talented young man. But what I like is the professionalism that he’s shown at this camp… So you’re seeing him play faster, freer, and more confident.”

Rookie impact: earning snaps beyond expectations

Entering camp, the backfield competition in Dallas featured seasoned veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, who signed one-year deals to bolster the unit.

Schottenheimer‘s remarks underscore where the coaching staff stands: Blue appears far ahead in grasping the playbook, comfortably communicating in meetings, and executing with confidence on the field.

The coaching staff has watched the rookie overcome the usual learning curve of signals and tempo, now responding instinctively, moving at full speed, reacting decisively, and showing maturity beyond his draft slot

With rookie camp turning into a grittier exhibition, Blue is no longer just the gadget back. He’s showing potential to contribute between the tackles, in the passing game, and as a threat in space, all traits the Cowboys have been seeking entering the 2025 season.
