Jaxson Dart’s heartbreaking reaction to Cam Skattebo’s gruesome ankle injury

For a moment on Sunday, the New York Giants‘ rivalry clash with the Philadelphia Eagles stopped being about football.

It was in the second quarter when rookie running back Cam Skattebo went down awkwardly after a tackle, his leg bent in a way that made even the broadcasters turn away.

The stadium fell silent as medical staff rushed to his side, and on the sideline, quarterback Jaxson Dart‘s reaction said everything.

Dart, who has developed a close bond with Skattebo during their rookie campaigns, was caught on camera shouting in frustration and shaking his head before being consoled by teammates.

It was a raw, emotional moment that spread quickly across social media, the face of a young leader processing a teammate’s pain.

Before the injury, Skattebo had been electric, racking up 30 total yards and a touchdown on just four touches. But the optimism that had carried the Giants‘ offense through weeks of adversity evaporated the instant he went down.

Trainers quickly stabilized his right ankle and carted him off the field, while teammates gathered to offer words of encouragement. The sight of Skattebo giving a thumbs-up to the crowd as he was driven away brought little comfort.

Giants lose another key playmaker as Dart reacts in disbelief

The Giants‘ rookie duo of Dart and Skattebo had been the unexpected heartbeat of a team still searching for its identity.

With wide receiver Malik Nabers already out for the season with a torn ACL and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. sidelined, Skattebo had stepped into the spotlight, averaging nearly 100 total yards and a touchdown per game between Weeks 2 and 7.

His bruising running style and versatility out of the backfield gave the Giants an edge they hadn’t shown in years. But now, with reports suggesting a serious ankle injury that could end his season, head coach Brian Daboll faces yet another uphill battle keeping his offense afloat.

Fox’s cameras briefly captured the aftermath, Skattebo grimacing as trainers worked on his leg, and Dart standing nearby, visibly distraught. For a rookie quarterback who had leaned heavily on his running back both on and off the field, it was a gut punch.

“His reaction was heartbreaking,” one fan wrote on X. “You could tell how much those two mean to each other.”

The Giants confirmed that Skattebo was taken for X-rays immediately after the play. Early indications point toward a severe fracture and possible ligament damage, though the team will await further tests before determining his official status.

Skattebo leads the team with 398 rushing yards and six total touchdowns, ranking fourth in receiving yards with 189. Losing him leaves a gaping hole in both production and morale, particularly for Dart, who credited his backfield partner for easing his own adjustment to the NFL.

A partnership built on belief and grit

Skattebo‘s bond with Dart had become one of the more uplifting stories in an otherwise turbulent season. Both players were drafted amid questions about their readiness for the pro level, but their shared work ethic quickly silenced critics.

In training camp, teammates noted how often the pair stayed late after practice, refining timing and communication on passing plays.

“Those two have something special,” a Giants staff member said earlier this season. “They’ve been growing together, learning from each other. You can see it in the way they play.”

For Dart, seeing Skattebo go down in such painful fashion was more than just losing a teammate – it was losing a friend and co-pilot in the team’s rebuilding journey.

As he walked off the field, head down and fists clenched, cameras caught what appeared to be him muttering an expletive under his breath, frustration boiling over in the moment.

The Giants, now sitting at 1-5, face the daunting task of regrouping without two of their top offensive weapons. Backup Tyler Huntley is expected to see more reps alongside Dart in practice this week, but there’s no replacing the spark Skattebo brought to the lineup.

While the road ahead looks bleak, the team’s response to Sunday’s adversity will likely define the rest of their season. Dart, still in his rookie year, has already shown flashes of leadership and maturity, and now faces his toughest test yet.

As for Skattebo, the Arizona State legend who became a fan favorite in New York for his fearless running style, his next battle will be fought in recovery, not on the gridiron. Yet if his college career was any indication, betting against his comeback would be a mistake.

When the camera panned back to Dart after Skattebo was carted away, he stood silently on the sideline, eyes fixed on the field. In that moment, the rookie quarterback didn’t look like a statistic on a rebuilding team.

He looked like a leader mourning a loss, and promising, silently, to fight for the teammate who couldn’t.
