The situation facing quarterbacks Jaxson Dart and Shedeur Sanders is not far from being similar. Neither has a guaranteed starting role and both will need to work to prove their talent is enough to be the future for the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, respectively.
The reality is we don’t know if they’ll play at all during the season, but in this part of the offseason, where many details are being ironed out, they remain players with significant potential.
Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart could share the same fate
“Jaxson Dart, he now appears to be the second-team quarterback,” ESPN’s Jordan Raanan wrote after noting that Russell Wilson is the player closest to leading the Giants‘ offense, which is why they brought him to the Big Apple.
The head coach of the New York Giants, Brian Daboll, previously mentioned that the former Ole Miss QB has been “excellent” in absorbing information and learning the playbook. However, like Shedeur Sanders, both are in a learning process.
The son of Coach Prime, unlike Dart, isn’t even guaranteed QB2 status. With the Browns, he competes against fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel as well as veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett.
But the circumstances differ. Jaxson Dart was selected earlier than Shedeur in the NFL Draft and is a project that will take time to develop. What could propel him onto the field is if Russell Wilson underperforms and there’s a lack of confidence in Jameis Winston.
On the other hand, Shedeur Sanders has nothing set in stone. The reality is that the Cleveland Browns have become a team with a revolving door of quarterbacks, potentially making them the worst franchise for starting an NFL career. It’s up to the former Colorado Buffaloes star to see if he can rewrite a history that no one before him has managed to change.
