Jaxson Dart will look to upset the Patriots: He’ll be the starting QB on MNF

The New York Giants are turning the page at quarterback as rookie Jaxson Dart is set to start in Monday night’s road game against the New England Patriots.

Dart, who has cleared concussion protocol, will take over for Jameis Winston, who had a two-week stint as the starter.

Interim head coach Mike Kafka confirmed the decision on Friday, signaling the team’s commitment to developing Dart as the potential long-term leader of the franchise.

Dart‘s playing style is fearless, which has contributed to his injury risk. He visited the blue medical tent multiple times during games, with his luck finally running out in a matchup against the Chicago Bears.

Despite these challenges, gaining live NFL experience remains critical for the former Ole Miss star.

Drafted 25th overall, Dart has shown promise over his first seven starts, completing 128-of-204 passes for 1,417 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He has complemented his passing numbers with an impressive rushing ability, totaling 317 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

While the Giants had simplified the offense to protect Dart early in his career, the team’s recent performance may allow him to test his arm more often.

The departure of Brian Daboll has opened the door for a more aggressive approach in the passing game.

During Winston‘s recent start, the veteran gunslinger found success pushing the ball downfield to wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, even in a 34-27 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions.

A Passing Attack Ready for Growth

New York had initially tailored the offense for Dart‘s strengths, emphasizing his mobility rather than asking him to throw deep.

With injuries sidelining key playmakers like Malik Nabers and rookie running back Cam Skattebo, the coaching staff prioritized caution to avoid forcing Dart into risky situations that could create bad habits. However, recent developments have changed the calculus.

Robinson has emerged as a breakout star, hauling in 66 catches for 794 yards. Theo Johnson leads the team with five receiving touchdowns, while 2020 sixth-round pick Isaiah Hodgins has made crucial catches over the past couple of weeks.

With this supporting cast, Dart now has the tools to lead a more robust passing game over the final five games of the season.

Even with these opportunities, Dart‘s health remains the top priority. Protecting the Kaysville, Utah native from unnecessary hits will be crucial as he gains experience and confidence in the NFL.

Monday night’s matchup against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium, scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET, presents a critical test for Dart as he looks to balance aggressive play with smart decision-making.

The Giants hope that by giving Dart more responsibility in the offense, he can continue to develop into the franchise quarterback they envisioned when drafting him.

If he stays healthy and leverages his talented receiving group, Dart could make a strong case for being the team’s starter for years to come.

With New York facing the final stretch of the season, all eyes will be on Dart to see how he handles the pressure, protects himself on the field, and leads the Giants in a pivotal Monday night showdown.
