Jaxson Dart will have to wait as Russell Wilson will start for the Giants on Saturday, per reports

During the week, Giants head coach Brian Daboll refused to reveal who would be his starting quarterback for the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills. The secrecy he maintained throughout the week on the matter seems to be fading this morning. According to reports, it will be Russell Wilson who will lead the Giants to open preseason action, not Jaxson Dart as initially expected.

The decision to start the former Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback stems from the desire to give him more opportunities to build chemistry with teammates he met only this season, and to get live-game repetitions with them.

Wilson joined the Giants in March as a free agent. Over his first weeks with the team, his vast NFL experience quickly earned him the designation of the franchise’s number one quarterback for the 2025 season.

This situation will prove valuable for young Jaxson Dart, who must gradually absorb the considerable differences between the professional game and the college level. While he is seen as the man to carry the team’s legacy forward, for now, his role will require patience.

This Saturday, the responsibility falls on the veteran and Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson. The quarterback arrived just a week before the April draft, and with that key piece in place to mentor their new prospect, the Giants went ahead and selected Dart. Since then, Wilson has been guiding him during practices on how to refine his on-field skills. The future appears to be in good hands-or at least, that is the hope, with Dart under center in the long term.

Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito are also part of the roster, though there is no clarity yet on how they will be utilized throughout the preseason, or even in this 2025 debut game. Daboll has not addressed the situation of these passers.

A season of rebirth for the Giants

The 2024 campaign was disappointing for the Giants, forcing the franchise to double down in hopes of significant improvement in 2025. The mission is anything but easy. In the NFC East, they will face both of last season’s conference finalists, underscoring just how competitive the division will be. On top of that, the Dallas Cowboys will be eager to reclaim lost ground, though that appears challenging.

The Giants’ full preseason slate

This afternoon, they will host the Buffalo Bills in their preseason opener. Their second matchup will also be in New York, this time against the Jets, meaning no travel will be required. They will close preseason play with a road trip to face the New England Patriots.

When the 2025 regular season begins, they will open against divisional rival Washington Commanders on September 7. The following week, they host their long-time rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, on September 14. In Week 3, they will travel to face the defending AFC champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.

The opening stretch for the New York Giants will be anything but easy. These first three games could set the tone for the team’s entire season.
