A seemingly casual exchange on the sidelines during the College Football Playoff has unexpectedly amplified the drama around the New York Giants‘ head coaching search.
Franchise quarterback and Ole Miss alumnus Jaxson Dart was caught on camera appearing to name two leading contenders to replace Brian Daboll, John Harbaugh, and Kevin Stefanski, prompting a frenzy of analysis from fans and media alike.
Although the two names could only be deduced via lip reading, Dart appeared to be mouthing the words, “I don’t know… Harbaugh or Stefanski… but I don’t know,” during a conversation with an Ole Miss assistant, which quickly circulated online. Fans have since been speculating whether or not Dart actually named Harbaugh or Stefanski.
The Giants are navigating one of the most consequential coaching searches in recent franchise history, balancing the desire for leadership stability with the need to maximize the potential of a young core led by Dart.
Giants’ coaching search heats up
The coaching carousel for the 2026 NFL offseason has been unusually active, and the Giants‘ vacancy sits near the center of the swirling speculation.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen has affirmed he will remain in charge of football operations and lead the search for a new head coach, a process ownership says is a priority after a disappointing 2025 season.
At the top of the list is veteran coach John Harbaugh, who parted ways with the Baltimore Ravens after an 18-year tenure that included a Super Bowl championship and well over 190 victories.
According to reporting by Connor Hughes, the Giants are “all-in” on Harbaugh and have done extensive research on him as a potential centerpiece of their rebuild.
Harbaugh‘s track record of longterm success and ability to cultivate winning cultures make him an appealing option for a franchise that has struggled to find consistency since the Tom Coughlin era, even as rival teams begin scheduling their interviews and filling their coaching staffs.
Emerging as a strong alternative is Kevin Stefanski, the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, whose first interview with the Giants reportedly “went very well,” according to sources close to Stefanski.
Stefanski, a two-time Pro Bowl offensive coordinator and Coach of the Year award winner during his time with the Browns, brings offensive expertise and credibility to the table, qualities that appeal to teams with young quarterbacks.
Beyond Harbaugh and Stefanski, the Giants are casting a wide net. Denver Broncos assistants like Davis Webb and Darren Rizzi have received interview requests, while former Falcons coach Raheem Morris and former Raiders interim coach Antonio Pierce are also in the mix following inperson interviews.
Some observers note that the Giants have already interviewed several prospects and are satisfying NFL mandatory processes, including the Rooney Rule, as they move closer to a hire.
