Javier Tebas: “It was impossible to say yes to Messi’s signing”

Javier Tebas spoke at the ISDE event, where he touched on several current issues. The president did not hold back, denying once again that Barcelona had LaLiga’s OK to sign Messi, as Xavi said and Mateu Alemany confirmed. In addition, he wanted to reinforce his message that LaLiga continues to grow and that he does not like the fifth European place. He also hit out at Florentino Perez, not without first pronouncing on his personal situation before the TAD and his disqualification process, which is stalled for now

The controversy with LaLiga’s alleged yes to Messi

“LaLiga’s yes they did not have it and they had never asked us. If they were not even in the rule 1.1. It was impossible to give a yes if you did not know what Messi was going to charge and more applying the regulations to the salary level that would be put. Although the contract put less was impossible but it is also never anyone from Barcelona addressed LaLiga“.

“It’s not true, Mateu Alemany is wrong. It is impossible even if they had an agreement. The valuation of the contract would have been like Joao Felix’s.

Fifth European place and the Spaniards in the Champions League

Spain’s situation regarding the extra place for Europe is favourable, although there is still a long way to go. However, for Tebas it is not something necessary, but rather something that seems to irritate him. At least, this is what he has hinted at with his words. “I don’t like the fifth Champions League places very much, but I’m going with the Spanish teams,” said the president, who always defends LaLiga, but would prefer not to have more qualifications. “It should be remembered that the product that competes most with LaLiga is the Champions League. The national leagues are the real football industry,” he added, to support his previous argument.

Tebas did not stop there. He had time for more. In this sense, he wanted to show what his role is or, at least, his ideals as president with respect to Europe. “I have an obligation to defend the majority of players and the majority do not play in European competitions or go to the World Cup,” he said

About the game in Miami

Taking Spanish football beyond the country’s borders is one of LaLiga’s medium-term goals. Javier Tebas is not giving up and believes it is an important objective. “There is a view that we don’t want to play, but we are going to keep trying,” he said. In addition, he took a direct swipe at Real Madrid, who he blames for the fact that this project was stopped. “There was a policy at Real Madrid that they had to try to stop that game… and for one game the trouble that has been caused,” he added.

Far from stopping there, the president insisted on the subject. To do so, he came up with a hitherto unknown argument: American fans. “Disrespect to American fans of Spanish football,” he explained. “They also pay their subscriptions,” he continued, to emphasize his belief that they too deserve to see their teams up close, and not just on television

His disqualification process

Beyond the strictly sporting, there was also time to talk about his disqualification process, not without first taking it with a laugh. “Nobody knows anything, neither do I,” he said. “Ask the Secretary of State or Florentino, who instead of disqualifying says that they are going to annihilate me,” he added to everyone’s surprise. These are harsh statements that he claims the Real Madrid president is making in his environment

On the other hand, he doubted the integrity of the TAD because of its components. “In this body, which is made up of excellent jurists, what need is there to hire friends? Why? What is the purpose? Let everyone think what they want,” he said. We will see what happens with this matter, but for the moment, he will remain in his position in charge of LaLiga.
