Javier Aguirre hopes to face Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal despite narco-related riots in Mexico

The mobilization of organized crime across various regions of Mexico has triggered uncertainty that could impact major sporting events in the country, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching, set to be hosted jointly by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Under this tense panorama, the scheduled match between the Mexican National Team and Portugal on March 28 at the historic Estadio Azteca has drawn international attention. Despite growing security concerns, officials have confirmed that the high-profile international friendly remains on the calendar.

Javier Aguirre’s stance on Mexico vs. Portugal

Javier Aguirre, head coach of the Mexico national team, stated this Tuesday that preparations remain unchanged and that he fully expects the match to serve as key preparation ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

“It doesn’t generate uncertainty for me. It’s normal that they are within their rights to evaluate the circumstances, but I contemplate that match for next month in the FIFA international window with my players who compete abroad. I believe the match against Portugal will take place without setbacks,” Aguirre said during a press conference.

His comments follow a statement from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), which confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation in Mexico after violent events erupted last Sunday in Jalisco and other regions. The unrest was reportedly linked to a security operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho”, alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

“I don’t know what image is held outside the country. We, as Mexicans, are sensitive to the moment we are living through, but our responsibility is to play this match and continue preparing for the March FIFA window. The Federation guarantees me that there is security for all of us,” the Mexican coach added.

With the World Cup 2026 venues already confirmed and Estadio Azteca set to play a historic role once again, the spotlight remains on how Mexico handles security ahead of one of the biggest sporting events in the world.
