Jason Whitlock claims that Shedeur Sanders suffers from a syndrome that affects his verbal comprehension

Shedeur Sanders faced scrutiny following a loss to the San Francisco 49ers as the Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback’s verbal response to a reporter drew criticism from analyst Jason Whitlock, who accused him of suffering from arrested development.

In Week 13, the Browns suffered a 26-8 defeat at home against San Francisco as Sanders, making only his second start, struggled to maintain offensive rhythm, reigniting discussion about the team’s quarterback situation. During the post-game press conference, a reporter asked about Sanders‘ relationship with head coach Kevin Stefanski, but he quickly dismissed the inquiry as inappropriate, defending his coach and the team’s approach without issuing criticism.

“First of all, that’s a rude question to ask,” Sanders said. “If I think, it was a great call by my coach. … I like being out there playing. So whatever comes with it, it comes with it, like we not going to be here and ever point fingers at not coach or do anything like that.”

Following the press conference, Whitlock posted a clip of Sanders‘ remarks online, framing the quarterback’s response as evidence of limited verbal comprehension and suggesting the QB suffers from what he termed “arrested development.”

“The reporter was not baiting Shedeur to criticize Stefanski,” Whitlock wrote via X.com, formerly Twitter. “The reporter expected Shedeur to say: ‘I like his belief in the offense to pick up those yards. He believes in us.’
Shedeur struggles with verbal comprehension. Arrested development. You might too.”

Despite Whitlock‘s critique, Stefanski remained supportive. Coming off a victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, the head coach hoped Sanders could provide continuity for the offense. The 49ers‘ blowout, however, exposed ongoing vulnerabilities as social media reacted strongly, with fans criticizing offensive execution and demanding accountability. Posts calling for Stefanski‘s dismissal gained traction, reflecting dissatisfaction with preparation and in-game decision-making throughout the season.

LeBron James backs Sanders after 49ers defeat

Sanders completed 16 of 25 passes for 149 yards, including a second-quarter touchdown to rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. on November 30, showing early signs of poise under pressure. His rise to starting quarterback followed an impressive debut after Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion, securing Sanders the role for the foreseeable future.

Despite the 49ers loss, LeBron James publicly supported Sanders, praising his decision-making and execution. “Helluva read and pass 12 [Sanders‘ jersey number]! Keep going,” James wrote on social media.

As analysts like Whitlock question his verbal and emotional maturity, supporters emphasize Sanders‘ ability to perform and adapt in a demanding professional environment. With the Browns preparing for upcoming games, Sanders will continue to face scrutiny but also opportunities to prove his capacity as a starting quarterback, beginning next time out against the 1-11 Tennessee Titans.
