Jason Kelce told Travis Kelce how he convinced NFL owners to keep the Tush Push during the annual NFL meeting

Since Nick Sirianni became the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022, the team has become synonymous with success, largely thanks to the leadership of quarterback Jalen Hurts. In four seasons, the Eagles have won a Super Bowl out of two appearances, secured two division titles, and boasted a 48-20 record. During that span, they are second only to the Kansas City Chiefs in wins. One of their most effective plays has been the “tush push,” a quarterback sneak that leverages Hurts’s gym-honed leg strength-he can squat up to 600 pounds-and the offensive line’s collective effort to gain crucial yards.

Jason Kelce Saved the “Tush Push” in the NFL Owners Reunion

The play’s effectiveness was so pronounced that it nearly faced a ban at the NFL owners’ annual meeting, proposed by the Green Bay Packers. However, the play survived by a narrow margin, thanks in part to the advocacy of former Eagles center Jason Kelce, who attended the meeting to defend it. In a recent episode of their podcast, New Heights, Jason and Travis Kelce discussed the near-ban of the “tush push” at the NFL owners’ meeting. Jason, who attended the meeting to argue in favor of the play, discussed his experience on the latest episode revealing the behind-the-scenes dynamics.

“There was a narrative out there that one of the reasons I retired was because of the play, or that I felt it led to more injuries or got injured because of it,” Jason explained.

He aimed to dispel these misconceptions, emphasizing that the “tush push” is relatively safe and effective. The NFL needed 24 votes to ban the play but only received 22. Jason’s passionate defense played a crucial role in preventing the ban. “I went up and spoke after Jeffrey Lurie started things off,” he said, describing the awe he felt witnessing the NFL’s legislative process firsthand.

Travis, listening in, marveled at his brother’s influence, joking about the “hundreds of billions of dollars of wealth” in the room. Jason’s presence and firsthand knowledge helped sway opinions, ensuring the play’s survival for another season.

The “tush push” has become a hallmark of the Eagles’ offensive strategy, and retaining it is beneficial for teams looking to exploit short-yardage situations. Jason’s comments on New Heights highlight the play’s tactical importance and the personal stakes involved. Rumors about his retirement due to the play’s physical toll were unfounded.

Eagles Capitalize on Tush Push Victory

In response to the “tush push” saga, the Eagles uploaded a 26-minute YouTube video compilation of the play in action. While perhaps not for everyone, this bold move sent a clear message. The champions are returning to the 2025 season as motivated as ever. They are fresh off a humbling Super Bowl win over the Chiefs and are ready to defend their NFC standing. Their division remains competitive, but with star players like Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley, the Eagles are poised to lead, unless injuries derail their plans. Their first test will be the season opener on Thursday, September 4, 2025, against the Dallas Cowboys at home, and the “tush push” could play a pivotal role.
