Jason Brownlee sends powerful message to Andy Reid after being cut for Rashee Rice

For Jason Brownlee, the past week was a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the NFL.

One moment, you’re lining up for the defending Super Bowl champions. The next, you’re back on the open market.

Yet the former Kansas City Chiefs receiver didn’t respond with frustration or bitterness. Instead, he delivered a message that spoke volumes about his character and determination.

“My story is gonna end legendary,” Brownlee posted on X shortly after news broke that the Chiefs had waived him to make room for Rashee Rice, who was reinstated from his six-game suspension.

The short post, accompanied by brick emojis, symbolized how he intends to keep building his career step by step, the same way he’s done since his college days.

Brownlee, 26, went undrafted out of Southern Miss in 2023 despite producing 2,144 yards and 21 touchdowns across his collegiate career.

He earned a shot with the New York Jets, catching five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown as a rookie, before being signed by Andy Reid and the Chiefs earlier this year.

Though he appeared in five games for Kansas City this season, Brownlee struggled to make an impact on offense, logging only 21 snaps without a catch. He was primarily used on special teams, where his effort and attitude earned him praise inside the locker room.

The decision to cut him wasn’t about performance, it was about making space for one of Patrick Mahomes‘ most dynamic weapons to return.

Rashee Rice’s comeback changes everything for the Chiefs

Rashee Rice has officially been reinstated to the Chiefs’ active roster after serving his six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

The 25-year-old wide receiver missed all of the 2024 season with a torn ACL, then faced off-field trouble stemming from his involvement in a multi-car crash in Dallas earlier this year.

Now fully recovered, Rice returns to an offense that has found rhythm in recent weeks, highlighted by a 30-17 win over the Detroit Lions. Mahomes expressed his excitement about getting his top target back, simply saying, “I’m very excited. I’ll just leave it there.”

Head coach Andy Reid echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that Rice‘s chemistry with Mahomes and his teammates will be crucial moving forward.

“They’ve got a good friendship, which will be needed now,” Reid said. “Because we’ve got a lot of guys and only one football.”

In Rice‘s absence, the Chiefs’ receiving corps has been a patchwork of emerging talent and veteran leadership.

Hollywood Brown has stepped up with 302 yards and three touchdowns, while rookie Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton have provided sparks downfield. Travis Kelce continues to be the stabilizing force, with 321 yards and two scores through six games.

Rice‘s return, however, gives Kansas City something it has lacked, a true physical playmaker who can take over games. In his rookie year, he caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns, quickly earning Mahomes‘ trust as a go-to option in critical moments.

For Brownlee, the door may not be fully closed in Kansas City. If he clears waivers, the Chiefs could bring him back to the practice squad, where he would remain just one injury away from a return to the field.

His message, though brief, suggests that he isn’t dwelling on the setback. “My story is gonna end legendary,” he wrote, a statement that fits perfectly in a league where persistence often matters more than pedigree.

While the spotlight shifts to Rice‘s long-awaited comeback, Brownlee‘s response serves as a reminder that the NFL’s toughest battles aren’t always fought on the field, sometimes, they’re about believing your story is still being written.
