At the start of his career, Boston Red Sox player Jarren Duran faced serious mental problems that led him to attempt suicide in 2022.
His depression was so strong that the center fielder pointed his rifle at himself and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire.
“I got to a point where I was sitting in my room, I had my rifle and a bullet, I pulled the trigger and the gun clicked, but nothing happened”, Duran revealed.
The Red Sox star saw it as a sign from God that the gun did not fire.
“So, to this day, I think God just didn’t allow me to take my life because, seriously, I don’t know why it didn’t work,” she explained.
These revelations were shared by the center fielder in the Netflix series, “The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox”.
TMZ Sports indicates in the fourth episode of the series, the player related that, although on the field he faced criticism from spectators for his play, he was even harder on himself.
“I was already hearing it from the fans,” Duran said. “And what they were telling me, it was like, ‘I’ve said ten times worse things to myself in the mirror’. It was a very difficult time for me. I didn’t even want to be here anymore,” he added.
Understanding that if he was alive it was for a reason, Duran saw changes in his personal life, but also found success on the field: in the 2023 season, he had a .295 batting average with 40 RBIs prior to his toe injury that sidelined him, according to TMZ Sports.
Last year was the best of his career so far, as in addition to winning the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award, he played 160 games and posted a .285 batting average, 21 home runs and 75 runs batted in.
