James Rodriguez unveils his next move after the World Cup with Colombia

James Rodríguez has made it clear that, for now, his focus remains firmly on the present, even as questions swirl about his future with Minnesota United FC and beyond.

The Colombian star, whose contract runs only through June, acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his next move but emphasized that he is not looking too far ahead. Instead, he is prioritizing his current form, his role with Minnesota and his upcoming commitments with the national team.

“I’m taking it one day at a time. I don’t want to think about the future because for me, thinking about what’s coming isn’t a good thing,” Rodríguez said. “I always live in the present. And for now, I’m here. I want to help. After the World Cup, we’ll see.”

A generational talent

That approach reflects a veteran who has experienced nearly everything the sport has to offer. Rodríguez has built a career that includes stops at global powerhouses such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Everton, establishing himself as one of the most recognizable attacking midfielders of his generation.

Yet despite his club success, his most memorable performances have consistently come on the international stage with Colombia. As captain of his national team, Rodríguez has scored 31 goals in 122 appearances and played in three FIFA World Cups.

His breakout moment came in 2014, when he won the Golden Boot and carried Colombia to the quarterfinals, cementing his status as a global star. Now, with another World Cup approaching, he is once again positioning himself to lead his country on the biggest stage.

One game at a time

Before that, however, Rodríguez is focused on regaining peak form in MLS. After dealing with a recent foot issue, he says he is close to full fitness and eager to contribute. “I’m ready. I’m fit to play now,” he said, adding that he expects to be fully prepared for Minnesota‘s next match.

That opportunity comes against Seattle Sounders, a familiar opponent following last year’s playoff meeting. Rodríguez believes the matchup presents a chance for Minnesota to respond after a disappointing result, particularly with the advantage of playing at home.

For Minnesota, the situation creates both opportunity and uncertainty. On one hand, they have a motivated, high-profile player capable of elevating the team in the short term. On the other, his long-term future remains unresolved, especially with Rodríguez himself indicating that any decisions will likely come after the World Cup.
