James Harden reunites with shooting survivor in touching moment for the Clippers star

James Harden has spent most of his NBA career in the spotlight, often for reasons tied to blockbuster trades or on-court drama.

This week, however, the former MVP was reminded of a far more meaningful chapter of his life as he reunited with John Hao, a Michigan State University student and survivor of the 2023 MSU campus shooting, in a moment that underscored Harden‘s impact beyond basketball.

The relationship between Harden and Hao began under tragic circumstances. In February 2023, Michigan State was shaken by a mass shooting that left the campus reeling. Hao, a devoted Harden fan, was among those wounded. He suffered a gunshot injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down, permanently altering his future. When Harden learned of Hao’s story and his admiration for “The Beard,” he reached out personally, offering support at a time when it was most needed.

Harden went beyond the court

Harden‘s involvement went beyond a simple message of encouragement. He sent Hao a pair of game-worn sneakers and helped provide financial assistance to support his long and demanding recovery process. Later that year, while playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, Harden invited Hao to attend a Game 7 playoff matchup against the Boston Celtics, placing him at the center of one of the league’s most intense environments.

What could have been perceived as a one-time act of kindness turned into a lasting connection. Harden continued to stay in touch with Hao, inviting him to additional games and regularly checking on his progress. The consistent communication made it clear that Harden’s interest was not tied to public attention, but to genuine concern for Hao’s well-being and resilience.

That bond was on full display Tuesday night when the two reunited during the Los Angeles Clippers‘ homestand against the Houston Rockets. The meeting served as a reminder of how far Hao has come since the shooting and of the role Harden has played in supporting him along the way.

A reunion that’s more lasting that any stat line

For Harden, whose career has included MVP honors, All-Star appearances, and countless headline moments, this reunion represented something more lasting than any stat line. For Hao, it was another sign that his journey, though forever changed, has been met with unwavering support from someone he once admired from afar.

Meanwhile, the Clippers are hoping to get back on track after beating the Houston Rockets 128-108. The Los Angeles team won back-to-back games and move to 8-21 on the season as the Rockets fall to 17-10.
