Jake Paul’s fight against Gervonta Davis suffers big hit that could alter boxing landscape

Boxing fans may not be overly excited for the upcoming Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis fight, but it will be tough for many to avert their eyes. Whether fans like it or not, Paul has become a power figure in the sport. And people want to see whether he can actually contend with legit boxers.

Despite the weight difference with Davis, this should be the true test of Paul’s boxing abilities – as long as Davis is allowed to go as hard as possible. Unfortunately, there really isn’t anything except bragging rights on the line. That much was confirmed on Friday when the executive director of the Florida Athletic Commission, Timothy Shipman, told USA Today Sports that Paul-Davis will be an exhibition fight.

Things might have been different if the location hadn’t changed from Atlanta to Miami, but Shipman and the commission have the final say on the matter. According to Shipman, “you can’t do a fight like that as a pro fight“, mainly due to the massive weight discrepancy between both boxers.

Due to not being a professional bout, other aspects surrounding the event will be affected. As Ben Axelrod of Awful Announcing points out, the fight may not be available on sportsbooks since it will only be an exhibition. That could cause several financial fallouts, given how prevalent betting was during the Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight.

Fans will surely find a way to bet on it somehow, perhaps just not legally. It will be interesting to see who the money will be on. Paul has the height, weight and size advantage, but Tank remains one of the most dangerous pound-for-pound punchers in the world.
