Jake Paul was left frozen as he watched his fiancée Jutta Leerdam’s hard fall at Olympic trials

It’s not often that Jake Paul is seen looking worried. The YouTuber-turned-boxer has built his public image around being untouchable, someone who absorbs every challenge without flinching. But that confidence faded in the stands this weekend, when his concern had nothing to do with a boxing ring and everything to do with his fiancée, Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam.

Leerdam was competing in the Dutch Olympic Trials, fighting for a place on the Netherlands’ speed skating team. Despite being an Olympic silver medalist from Beijing 2022 and a two-time World Cup winner in the 1000 meters, the road back to the Games has demanded everything from her. Paul watched as her Olympic dream suddenly teetered on the edge during what was supposed to be her strongest event.

A fall no one expected

During the 1000m race, Leerdam lost control at roughly 30 mph and crashed violently into the barrier, failing to finish. The impact immediately ruled her out of qualifying in that event for the Milan Winter Games and left her visibly shaken. Paul, still recovering after suffering a broken jaw in his recent bout with Anthony Joshua, could do nothing but look on helplessly as she made her way off the ice in tears.

For any athlete, letting go of an Olympic dream is never simple. Leerdam left the rink emotionally crushed, and Paul’s reaction reflected the weight of the moment. The usually unshakable figure looked stunned, watching someone he cares about face the kind of setback that no amount of preparation can soften.

The comeback everyone waited for

What followed, however, reminded the speed skating world why Leerdam remains one of the sport’s elite. After the painful fall all eyes turned to the following events, where she returned to the ice for the 500m amid nervous anticipation.

Leerdam delivered under pressure, finishing second in the 500m Olympic qualifier with an impressive time of 37.42 seconds, just behind Femke Kok. There was little disappointment in that result, as Kok set a track record with a 36.87. Later that day, Leerdam skated again, posting a 37.59 in her second race, a solid performance that reinforced her consistency.

The strong showing has put Leerdam back on track, and she is now expected to secure her place on the Dutch Winter Olympic squad despite the earlier scare. What began as a heartbreaking scene ended as a reminder of resilience, both for an athlete chasing the Olympics and for the partner who had to watch it all unfold, frozen in the moment when everything seemed to slip away.
