Jake Paul has offered Tommy Fury a boxing lifeline after he backed out of a fight with Darren Till by telling the British fighter he will take him on again, on the condition they go 12 rounds this time.
The Problem Child took on the 25-year-old on February 26, 2023 in a cruiserweight contest and lost via a 74-75, 76-73, 76-73 split decision, despite scoring a flash knockdown on the night in Riyadh, in Saudi Arabia.
Now buoyed by his victory over Iron Mike Tyson on November 15, it seems as though he wants to avenge his loss and considering Fury now has an open spot on his calendar for around January 2025, senses the opportunity is here.
“Only if it’s 12 rounds,” Paul posted to X.com, formerly Twitter, on December 6, although there seemed to be some confusion about whether he was talking about Fury or Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez.
Fury pulled out of the fight against Till, an ex-UFC fighter, on the grounds that the MMA man threatened to kick him in the head in the ring to beat him in a meeting that was supposed to happen on January 18.
Despite later confessing he has always followed regulation rules and his comments were a psychological mind trick designed to unsettle the boxer, the fight has not been continued as of December 7.
Is Paul snubbing Saudi Arabia?
His comment could be taken as an indication that he is not willing to listen to Saudi Arabia’s Tuki Al-Sheikh, after the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority reportedly offered $700m for an unscripted rematch of the clash with Tyson.
The development came after claims that the 58-year-old was instructed not to hurt Paul in their clash at the AT&T Stadium, with fans pointing to examples of him appearing to hold back punches in good positions as well as biting his gloves to vent frustration.
“Jake Paul is a joke,” Al-Sheikh told FFTV. “I am giving Mike Tyson $700 million if he agrees to fight Jake Paul this time in a real fight and wins by KO in a maximum of 3 minutes.”
