Jake Paul claims to be bigger than Muhammad Ali and has support from figures including UFC’s Chael Sonnen

Jake Paul, the influencer turned professional boxer, sparked a new controversy by declaring that he is “the best thing that has happened to boxing since Muhammad Ali”. Surprisingly, former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen came out to endorse his words, which adds an extra point of attention just before his fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28.

I’m the best thing that happened to boxing since Muhammad Ali… what I’ve accomplished speaks for itself

Jake Paul

He claimed that, in just 12 fights, he has revitalized the sport, built gyms, promoted amateur and professional women’s boxing, and invested his earnings in charitable donations.

Why is Jake Paul and his comparison to Muhammad Ali causing a stir in the boxing world?

Muhammad Ali, known as The Greatest, was not only a pioneer in the ring, but also a social activist of global scope. Muhammad was a world champion and a symbol of civil justice. Therefore, comparing oneself to him is an extreme gesture that many consider disrespectful.

Jake Paul’s fight records are questioned

Jake Paul boasts victories over Mike Tyson (former champion), Nate Diaz and Anderson Silva, and plans to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. However, critics point out that he has not faced elite active boxers in their prime.

Chael Sonnen confirms Jake Paul’s trajectory

Former UFC interim champion Chael Sonnen responded on his X account:

Cada palabra es cierta.

This support is surprising: an MMA fighter recognises that Jake Paul has had an impact, at least in terms of media visibility. It also reinforces the narrative that Paul has brought attention and resources to boxing.

The press criticizes Jake Paul for his comparison to Muhammad Ali

Beyond his inflated ego, there’s no denying that Jake Paul has attracted millions of viewers. His fight against Tyson was the first on Netflix, with more than 100 million global viewers. In addition, his MVP promotion has boosted women’s boxing, signing champions such as Amanda Serrano and Alycia Baumgardner.Jake Paul combines provocation, spectacle and clever negotiation. His disruptive style generates anticipation, millions in revenue and sponsorships. But he has yet to face A-class opponents. His opponents have been mainly celebrities or former stars, not gladiators at their peak.

Jake Paul vs Chavez Jr

The next challenge is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., a veteran former champion. Victory could strengthen his case and bring him closer to world title fights with Badou Jack or Gilberto Ramirez. But if he loses or is unconvincing, his heel will remain the doubt about his real level.

Jake Paul knows how to draw attention: controversy, spectacle and unexpected backing. However, the comparison with Muhammad Ali remains too ambitious. If he manages to beat Chavez Jr. and move on to elite fights, perhaps his strategy will make more sense. June 28 will be a key day to define whether his greatness holds up.
