Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua fight have fans questioning the boxing bout

The announcement of a professional boxing match between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua has sparked a wave of criticism across the boxing world, with many fans and analysts questioning whether the bout belongs in a legitimate sporting conversation at all.

While the fight is expected to draw enormous attention and viewership, a significant portion of the boxing community has dismissed it as a spectacle rather than a meaningful contest. The most common concern centers on the massive gap in experience and skill.

Joshua is an Olympic gold medalist and a former two-time unified heavyweight champion who has built his résumé across 32 professional bouts against elite opposition. His career includes championship reigns, sold-out arenas, and years competing at the highest level of the sport. Paul, by contrast, is still widely viewed as a novice despite his growing profile.

Jake Paul’s résumé does not add up

The 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer holds a 12-1 record, largely against former MMA fighters and an aging Mike Tyson, who was 58 at the time of their exhibition bout. To many purists, that résumé does not come close to preparing Paul for a fighter of Joshua’s caliber.

There is also a significant size issue that has raised safety concerns. Paul has spent most of his boxing career campaigning at cruiserweight, while Joshua is a natural heavyweight who has regularly outweighed him by nearly two stone, roughly 28 pounds. When combined with Joshua‘s technical polish and power, critics fear the matchup creates a dangerous scenario that puts Paul at risk of serious injury rather than providing a competitive fight.

Skepticism has also grown around the motivations behind the matchup. Several industry figures, including British promoter Frank Warren, have suggested that the bout is driven more by commercial opportunity than sporting merit. For Joshua, the fight represents a massive payday and increased exposure in the United States at a time when his championship path remains uncertain. That has fueled accusations that the contest prioritizes entertainment value over competitive integrity.

Both camps denied claims about the fight

The unusual nature of the matchup has even led to rumors questioning its legitimacy, with some fans speculating about scripted outcomes or contractual clauses limiting how the fight can end. Both camps have strongly denied those claims, and the Florida Athletic Commission has confirmed that the bout is fully sanctioned as a professional fight with knockouts permitted. Still, the speculation reflects how difficult it has been for some fans to take the event seriously.

There are also concerns about what the fight could mean for Joshua‘s legacy. Promoters and fellow boxers, including Eddie Hearn and Dave Allen, have warned that a loss to Paul would undermine everything Joshua achieved as a world champion, regardless of context. Even a comfortable win may do little to advance his standing among boxing purists who want to see him face top contenders.

Despite the criticism, the fight is expected to be a massive commercial success. Airing live on Netflix, it is likely to draw a global audience that extends well beyond traditional boxing fans. Joshua has brushed off the backlash, saying he understands the expectation to put an end to the “Jake Paul show” and intends to win decisively.
