The UCLA Bruins women’s basketball team made history on April 5, capturing the program’s first NCAA national championship after a dominant 79-51 victory over South Carolina Gamecocks led by Dawn Staley.

Central to this achievement was senior guard Gabriela Jaquez, whose remarkable performance in the championship game solidified her place as one of the premier players in college basketball.

She finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists over 34 minutes of play, showcasing her versatility and leadership.

For Jaime Jaquez Jr., the Miami Heat forward and UCLA alumnus, the victory was more than just a basketball win, it was a moment of family pride.

Jaquez Jr. was in the arena to witness his sister’s historic achievement, and he later shared heartfelt insights about Gabriela’s journey, highlighting the determination, toughness, and relentless work ethic that defined her development.

“Man, I remember all her attitude that she had when she was a little girl. But now, it’s working out for her. Look at how far she has made it. She has been great; she was always a great younger sister. She used to annoy the hell out of me, but as we got older, we started to understand each other a lot more. And I’m just really, really proud of her,” Jaime Jaquez Jr. recalled in an Instagram post shared by @sportsish.

From a young age, Gabriela sought challenges that would push her limits.

According to her brother, “She has it. That’s one thing she definitely has. She used to play with my little brother’s team. She used to play with the boys when she was younger, so she knows what it takes.

“She has always looked for the hardest challenge possible, and she was never afraid. So that’s why I know she was ready for this moment.”

An athletic legacy and a bright future

The Jaquez family is no stranger to athletic excellence. Gabriela and Jaime come from an extremely athletic household, where sports and competition were integral parts of their upbringing.

Their experiences helped shape Gabriela into the versatile and fearless player she is today, and Jaime‘s presence in her career highlights the strong bond between the siblings.

Looking ahead, Gabriela is expected to be a first-round selection in the 2026 WNBA Draft. While questions remain about which team will ultimately select her, fans are already imagining the possibility of a reunion with her brother in the professional ranks.

Regardless of where she lands, her rise from a competitive young girl to a national champion represents a story of resilience, determination, and familial support.

Beyond the stats, beyond the accolades, this championship is a testament to Gabriela‘s journey, the influence of her family, and the guidance of her older brother.

As Gabriela Jaquez steps into the next chapter of her career, she carries with her not just a championship title but also the pride and unwavering support of a brother who has watched her grow from a spirited little sister into a future WNBA star.
