The Jacksonville Jaguars are at a crossroads after dropping two consecutive games, exposing major issues on offense.
With the NFL trade deadline nearing, attention has turned to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., whose disappointing season has sparked speculation about his future in Jacksonville.
As reported by Dianna Russini of The Athletic, “The Jaguars are listening on calls for WR Brian Thomas Jr., even if a move feels highly unlikely.”
Russini also noted that the front office is exploring defensive additions, hinting that the team could be preparing for roster adjustments following a demoralizing 35-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and another defeat against an NFC West opponent.
Offensive slump and uncertainty surrounding Thomas
After a breakout season in 2024, Thomas’ performance has taken a sharp downturn. Through seven games, he has recorded only 27 receptions and one touchdown-a far cry from his 87-catch, 1,300-yard campaign last year.
His chemistry with quarterback Trevor Lawrence has faltered, and he has drawn criticism for cautious play, including during the recent matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Jaguars are not signaling a full-scale rebuild, but they are fielding inquiries. Teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills are believed to be monitoring the situation closely.
The Steelers continue to seek a reliable No. 2 option beside DK Metcalf, while the Bills want another vertical threat to complement quarterback Josh Allen and expand their passing game.
Trading Thomas would not come lightly-at just 23 years old, he remains one of the most physically gifted receivers in the conference. However, if Jacksonville believes it can bolster its defense and reset its offensive rhythm, listening to offers may be a strategic move.
At 4-3, the Jaguars are hoping to mount a run to ensure they make the playoffs. However, a few losses would send them spiralling in the other direction, and thus throw Thomas’ future with the team into question.
