Jaguars co-owner makes Travis Hunter’s role clear after revealing the secrets behind his selection

When the Jacksonville Jaguars made the bold move to trade up to the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the message was unmistakable: they were all-in on Travis Hunter.

A Heisman-winning sensation from Colorado, Hunter became the center of one of the most ambitious trades in Jaguars history, costing the franchise two first-round picks and a second-round pick.

For many franchises, that price tag might seem extreme, but Jacksonville saw Hunter as far more than a typical draft prospect.

From ownership down through the front office and coaching staff, the decision to acquire Hunter wasn’t made on a whim.

Instead, it was the product of months of preparation, planning, and unified belief in Hunter’s game-changing abilities. Jaguars co-owner Tony Khan recently shed light on the meticulous groundwork that led to Hunter’s selection during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show.

“Well in advance. And it really speaks to the preparation,” Khan explained. “I think James Gladstone, Liam Coen, Tony Boselli, we have a great football leadership and really a lot of great communication.”

Khan emphasized the collaborative process and the foresight involved. According to him, General Manager James Gladstone, Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen, and others had been eyeing Hunter for quite some time.

And for Khan, who has deep roots in football analytics, Hunter‘s data made a compelling case: “An analytics person and working in football analytics, Travis Hunter had some of the most impressive statistics on both sides of the ball.”

Two-way talent, one big vision

Hunter’s rare two-way capability, playing both cornerback and wide receiver at an elite level, makes him a unique NFL prospect. Not since the days of Deion Sanders has a player with legitimate two-way dominance entered the league with such fanfare.

But the Jaguars don’t view Hunter merely as a novelty act. Khan made it clear that a deliberate plan is already in place to incorporate his talents on both sides of the ball: “To be able to bring in somebody that can add so much value to the team on both sides of the ball, and with the great plan that Liam has to use Travis, I just think he’s going to be so great.”

The Jaguars have already started prepping Hunter in practice for dual positional responsibilities, marking the beginning of what could be a transformative career for both player and franchise.

And while drafting a player of Hunter‘s caliber carries natural risk, especially considering the investment made, Khan praised the calm, confident execution of the plan by first-year GM James Gladstone.

“They had made the deal in advance, and barring anything unforeseen, with the number one pick, this was going to happen. And I just think, for a person who’s a first-year general manager, James had great composure and a great plan, and it was very impressive,” he said.

Hunter‘s addition represents more than just a talent acquisition, it’s a statement of intent from a franchise that wants to redefine its identity. With Trevor Lawrence still under center and a young, hungry coaching staff led by Liam Coen, the Jaguars are betting that Hunter‘s historic versatility will unlock a new era in Jacksonville.

If all goes according to plan, Travis Hunter may go down as the most impactful draft pick of the Khan family’s ownership, and possibly one of the most unique players in modern NFL history.
