Jac Caglianone turns into Barry Bonds and has fans risking their lives to catch his home run balls

It hasn’t been the start to his MLB career that Jac Caglianone envisioned when the Kansas City Royals called him up in early June. After crushing his way through every kind of minor league pitching, the Royals felt there was no need to keep the 22-year-old waiting in the wings. But since his debut on June 3, Caglianone is hitting just .149 across 89 at-bats.

His trademark power has been on display sporadically. A two-homer game in June and back-to-back contests with dingers in early July have given Royals fans a glimpse of the future. On Monday, Caglianone rounded the bases once again, and in doing so, nearly hurt a Chicago Cubs fan at Wrigley Field.

Chicago Cubs fan injures himself trying to grab Jac Caglianone’s home run ball

Caglianone striped a 1-2 breaking ball the other way, muscling it out of the park for a go-ahead solo home run. The ball landed in the famous Wrigley Field basket, nestling itself in the netting. Once fans saw it, two of them made their move to secure the ball. But one was more desperate.

A fan sitting in the front row tracked it all the way, then launched himself over the railing and dove into the basket to grab the ball. The other fan tried to get the ball, too, but then turned into saving mode as he attempted to help the other fan get out of the netting and back over to the stands.

The fan suffered minor injuries, but it wasn’t the smartest move. At least not in the moment; perhaps in the future Caglianone’s home run balls will be worth some serious cash.

The move by the fan reminded some of how fanatics went crazy trying to catch Barry Bonds‘ home run balls during the tail-end of his career, as he embarked on his record-breaking journey. Caglianone is far from there, but the power is undeniable.
