Ja Morant says he wants to take on Mac McClung in NBA dunk contest: Fans call his bluff

Mac McClung’sshow-stealing performance dropped more than a few jaws Saturday night. The guard for the G League’s Osceola Magic won his third straight slam dunk contest with three spectacular executions, inspiring Ja Morant in the process, who threatened to enter the battle next year.

McClung has dominated the NBA All-Star Weekend slam dunk contest three years in a row. The four-year veteran is still looking for a place in the NBA, and his performance on Saturday night surely caught the attention of more than one team.

However, the one who was most impressed with the perfect score with which McClung was crowned slam dunk champion was Ja Morant. Following the dunk contest, the Memphis Grizzlies guard took to social media with a message that got NBA fans excited.

Will Morant compete in 2026?

Although he is recognized as one of the best dunkers in the NBA, Morant has never participated in a dunk contest, but that could be about to change. “Mac might make me decide to dunk,” the Grizzlies star said in a message on X (formerly Twitter), but he doesn’t want to do it alone.

Replying to his own post, Morant challenged two other expert dunkers to join him in an upcoming contest, Denver Nuggets power forward Aaron Gordon and Sacramento Kings shooting guard Zach LeVine. “Zach & AG, wassup,” Morant wrote, with no response from either so far. Still, his original tweet sparked a firestorm among X users.

Fans don’t trust Morant

The reaction from netizens was overwhelming, with most not believing the Grizzlies guard was serious. “We not falling for the gimmick, Ja,” one fan claimed, “All talk you not actually pulling up,” another said, and yet another chided, “Either step up to help sell the game or shut up.”

Not only has Morant never participated in a dunk contest, but he also recently said his dunking days are coming to an end. But even if he keeps his word, many fans doubt he can hold a candle to McClung’s physics-defying dunks.
