J.J. Redick mocks those who thought the LeBron James commercial was announcing his retirement

LeBron James sparked quite a stir with the release of “The Second Decision,” a Hennessy commercial that led many fans to believe he was announcing his retirement from the NBA. But none of that was true.

It was simply part of a clever marketing campaign for the brand-one that fooled plenty of people into thinking this would be LeBron’s final season with the Los Angeles Lakers, or even in professional basketball altogether.

You guys are idiots.”… “We all knew it was an ad, right? I’m sure I got some texts. … I think most people that text me are also aware that it was probably an ad. Nobody was freaking out.

Those were the words of Lakers head coach J.J. Redick, who laughed off the public’s reaction to the campaign.

Of course, this is not the first time speculation about LeBron’s future has surfaced. As he enters his 23rd NBA season, talk of retirement has followed him for years. Yet James continues to show that his drive, competitiveness, and physical condition remain intact. He still hungers to compete at the highest level and to defy age in a league that keeps getting younger and faster.

LeBron James’ productivity at 40

Many people believe that LeBron should consider stepping away from basketball and enjoy his immense fortune alongside his family. But the four-time NBA champion sees things differently. His mentality revolves around longevity and legacy, proving to younger players that with discipline, commitment, and professionalism, it is possible to perform at an elite level even at 40.

Last season, James appeared in 70 games, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game. His steady production helped the Lakers achieve a 55-33 record in J.J. Redick’s first year as head coach.

That performance was good enough to take the team to the postseason, though they were eliminated in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Even so, LeBron’s consistency and leadership continued to define the Lakers’ identity.

Earlier this year, rumors surfaced that Los Angeles might trade James following the arrival of Luka Doncic. However, the unexpected chemistry between the two superstars quickly silenced that speculation. Their collaboration rejuvenated the team’s offense and gave Lakers fans hope that another deep playoff run could still be possible.

Now, as the franchise gears up for the start of the new NBA season on Tuesday, October 21, against the Golden State Warriors, LeBron James remains focused on making history every time he steps onto the court.

Even as critics and fans debate when he might finally retire, LeBron continues to set the standard for longevity and excellence in professional sports. The King is not ready to abdicate his throne just yet-and his message to doubters could not be clearer.
