Isiah Pacheco’s job on the line: enters final rookie year, faces stiff competition for Chiefs’ lead RB role

Last year was a rollercoaster for Isiah Pacheco. While he kicked off the season at full throttle, a leg injury abruptly halted his momentum, preventing him from continuing the impressive statistical pace he had set during his first two years in the league. The setback not only disrupted his personal rhythm but also affected the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive output during key stretches.

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, pressure is mounting for the dynamic running back to return to peak form. During his first two years, Pacheco rushed for over 800 yards each season and recorded at least five touchdowns annually. Expectations are sky-high, and anything less than a return to that level will raise questions about his role on the team.

This season marks Pacheco’s third year and the final one under his rookie contract. That reality alone elevates the stakes, as he must perform at maximum capacity from Week 1 if he hopes to secure his long-term future with the Chiefs. Complicating matters is the growing competition in the running back room, where Elijah Mitchell and rookie Brashard Smith are poised to push for snaps. With the margin for error razor-thin, any slip-up could place Pacheco’s starting role in jeopardy.

Recently, NFL.com offered insight into the high-stakes scenario Pacheco finds himself in:

The injury bug derailed Isiah Pacheco’s third season,”… “The Chiefs RB suffered a fractured fibula in Week 2, and when he returned, he didn’t appear to be the same angry runner down the stretch of the Chiefs’ regular season and playoff run. Pacheco has bulked up to 216 pounds, just like how he entered the NFL.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs took a flier in the draft by selecting Brashard Smith out of SMU in the seventh round. Pacheco will hope he can have an impact just like his first two seasons in the league, but if he has a slow start, Smith, along with Kareem Hunt and Elijah Mitchell, could take some snaps from the electric RB1.

The good news: it’s still in his hands

With training camps set to return soon, Pacheco knows full well that his future with the team hinges on immediate performance. To meet the expectations of the franchise and the passionate Chiefs Kingdom, he must deliver from the moment he steps onto the field.

Analysts even suggest that a strong showing in the preseason will be vital. With competition so tight, he can’t afford a slow start-especially under the watchful eye of Andy Reid, who won’t hesitate to make adjustments at the slightest sign of underperformance.

Pacheco is clearly walking a tightrope. A minor mistake, combined with standout performances from Mitchell, Smith, or even veteran Kareem Hunt, could be all it takes for a change at running back to occur. For Pacheco, the path forward is clear: dominate early, or risk fading out of the Chiefs’ offensive picture.
