Is Serena Williams returning to the US Open? Former coach hints she might

Such a development would thrill millions of fans worldwide, offering another chance to witness the immense talent of tennis legend Serena Williams.

Serena captured 23 Grand Slam singles titles over her career, in addition to 14 Grand Slam victories in women’s doubles and two mixed doubles crowns, an unmistakable mark of dominance in the sport.

She spent 319 weeks as the WTA world No. 1 and claimed 73 WTA Tour singles titles. All of this came before her final US Open appearance in 2022, at age 40, when she lost in the third round to Ajla Tomljanovic.

The return of her sister Venus

Meanwhile, her older sister Venus has returned to her great love-tennis. She has made it clear that she never officially announced her retirement, explaining that she was simply taking a break from competition because she genuinely enjoys the game.

At 45, Venus became the second-oldest woman in history -behind only Martina Navratilova– to win a WTA singles match. She achieved the milestone by defeating world No. 35 Peyton Stearns at the Washington Open, 6-3, 6-4, after a 16-month hiatus.

Venus, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, received a wild-card entry for the upcoming US Open. When she steps on court in New York, she will set another career milestone, her 25th appearance at the tournament, which begins August 24.

Rick Macci is confident Venus will not be alone. The renowned coach, who trained both sisters early in their careers, believes Serena will join Venus in the doubles draw in New York.

On his X account, Macci shared his thoughts:

Asked if Serena will play doubles with Vee at the Open. My gut is probably [yes] because at the end of the day Serena can still play even though she has been away.

Her serve is still one of the best on the planet and when she competes her mindset is like granite.

The legendary career of Serena Williams

With her record, Serena Williams is widely regarded as the greatest of all time in women’s tennis, a title few would dispute. Her achievements, resilience, and competitive fire make the label a perfect fit.

Currently, Serena is enjoying life away from the court, traveling extensively and spending time with her daughters. For Macci, though, a comeback may be more than just wishful thinking, but as the saying goes, seeing is believing.

Both her and Serena, as you saw from the movie King Richard, are both like my daughters.

Macci added.

Especially Venus, because she was a little older and I spent more time with her.

Listen, at the end of the day, she just loves to play. I saw the same smile and enthusiasm. She won that match [against Peyton Stearns in Washington], she’s bouncing up and down like a human pogo stick. The same thing I saw at age 14, it was identical.
