Rory McIlroy‘s 2025 season began with a historic triumph at Augusta National, where he completed the elusive career Grand Slam and became the first Irishman to don the green jacket.
But since that crowning moment, the four-time major champion has gone noticeably quiet-skipping major PGA Tour events and avoiding the media spotlight. His absence has ignited fresh speculation about whether McIlroy is winding down his competitive golf career or simply recalibrating his priorities.
The 35-year-old has not addressed the press since his Masters victory and was notably absent from the 2025 Memorial Tournament, one of the season’s premier signature events.
Instead, he’s reportedly preparing to move into a newly renovated $11 million home in Surrey after the U.S. Open-suggesting a desire to spend more time with his family away from the public eye.
On the Fore Play Podcast Plus, hosts Trent and Riggs explored the idea that McIlroy may be losing interest in the demands of professional golf. “I’m not saying he’s just like, ‘oh, f-ck it. I’m not calling Jack because I got everything I wanted,'” Trent said.
“But not talking to the media… more that he’s just like, ‘I don’t f-cking care.'” Riggs added that someone close to McIlroy‘s camp mentioned rumors of possible retirement, though he remained unconvinced himself.
McIlroy’s Legacy Looks Secure
While the retirement rumors are still unconfirmed, McIlroy hasn’t exactly shut them down either. Speaking back in March at The Players Championship, he explained his outlook on stepping away.
Stating: “I think [I’ll move on] when I’ve achieved everything I want to achieve in the game and I get to the point where I don’t think I can maybe do that anymore.” He added that when that moment arrives, he wants to leave “with a little bit left in the tank.”
With 29 PGA Tour wins, four major titles, and a place atop the Race to Dubai rankings, McIlroy may well feel he’s reached the peak. And after years of media duties, public scrutiny, and a high-profile role in golf’s battle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, it’s easy to understand if he’s ready for a quieter chapter.
But McIlroy isn’t disappearing just yet. He’s confirmed to return to action at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in November. The tournament opens the DP World Tour Play-Offs and plays a vital role in determining the Race to Dubai winner.
“I love ending the season in the Middle East and I’m excited to return to Abu Dhabi again for the first of two big events later this year,” he said.
“I’ve started the year well and I’ve got a good record at Yas Links, so hopefully I can continue doing what I’m doing and give myself a chance of finishing the season strongly and having a shot of getting another Race to Dubai under my belt.”
If this is the final stretch of McIlroy‘s career, he’s charting it on his own terms-minimizing the noise, maximizing time with family, and showing up only where it matters most. Whether or not a retirement announcement comes soon, his legacy as one of Europe’s all-time greats is already secure.
