There is only one preseason game left before the Dallas Cowboys’ Kickoff, where they will have a tougher start than they imagined: the Philadelphia Eagles as visitors. Certainly no team will want to face the current NFL champions. Therefore, the Texan team will have to polish all its pieces, from the starters to the bench players. In this aspect, they have been working on who will be the backup quarterback to Dak Prescott.
Joe Milton has taken to the gridiron in the first two preseason games where, as normal as it may seem, he struggled against the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens. Is it time to worry about the backup quarterback spot? Excitement was at an all-time high when the Dallas Cowboys landed Joe Milton in a trade with the New England Patriots this offseason. However, his actions have left doubts rather than praise.
The reasons for doubting Joe Milton as Dak Prescott’s backup
Against the Los Angeles Rams, his first three offensive series went “3 and out”. Milton proved to be promising during his first season in the league, and while no one in their right mind thought he was a threat to Dak Prescott, Dallas fans were still excited to see what he could do in the preseason. After two games, that excitement has turned to concern. The quarterback, with his strong arm, has made mistakes by throwing too fast, which has led to dropped passes.
He has also missed completely uncovered receivers and failed to see a free runner, resulting in a safety against the Baltimore Ravens. He settled down in the second half of both games, but it is clear that he still has some development to do. This has led fans to wonder if Will Grier is a more suitable second quarterback, but head coach Brian Schottenheimer is not ready to make a decision.
Dallas Cowboys head coach remains calm with Joe Milton
Schottenheimer also said that he is not willing to panic about Joe Milton, adding that his concern is that the offense itself fails to find rhythm. The head coach said the team will continue to rely on Prescott’s backup and stated that he has to find a way to add good plays. “For a young quarterback, the important thing is to accumulate plays,” Schottenheimer said via The Athletic‘s Jon Machota.
“It’s about getting a streak of complete passes. We’ll keep trusting Joe. He made some excellent passes. The interception is the first thing that stands out to me. I wish he had gotten it back”. Schottenheimer added that Milton will play most of his last preseason game again, stating that they know what they have in Grier as a possible backup. Now, it will be up to Milton to prove that he deserves the second spot.
