Philadelphia Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman took an unusually proactive approach in drafting quarterback Kyle McCord in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Rather than simply selecting a talented prospect, Roseman made it a personal mission to secure McCord, even reaching out to Syracuse offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon for a thorough scouting report ahead of the draft.

This level of attention, typically reserved for higher-round picks, underscores Roseman’s conviction in McCord’s potential and fit within the Eagles’ system. McCord’s football journey has been full of twists and turns. Originally a five-star recruit out of St. Joseph’s Prep, he won three state championships in high school before heading to Ohio State.

Though his time there was productive, McCord truly flourished after transferring to Syracuse, where he threw for 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns while completing 66% of his passes in his final collegiate season. Despite his high-level production, he slipped to the sixth round, giving Roseman a unique opportunity to acquire a player he had been tracking for years.

Roseman didn’t hesitate to praise McCord’s quick processing and anticipation, emphasizing his ability to read defenses and deliver accurate throws under pressure. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, the Eagles GM highlighted McCord’s statistical dominance, noting his high passing yardage totals and efficiency as a signal-caller. “He’s throwing the ball all over the field,” Roseman said, reinforcing his belief that McCord brings a valuable skill set to Philadelphia’s quarterback room.

The room if definitely full of talent

The Eagles now have a deep and competitive quarterback depth chart heading into training camp, with McCord joining Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson. While Hurts remains the clear starter, the battle for the backup role will be intriguing. McKee showed promise last season in limited action, but McCord’s ability to process plays quickly and make pinpoint throws could give him a strong case for earning meaningful reps.

For Philadelphia, McCord represents more than just a late-round selection-he could be yet another example of Roseman’s ability to find hidden gems in the draft. The Eagles have a track record of developing quarterbacks into valuable assets, either as long-term contributors or as trade pieces, and McCord’s pedigree suggests he could be the next success story. His ability to thrive in high-pressure situations makes him a compelling prospect, even at his draft position.

With training camp and preseason approaching, McCord will have every opportunity to prove himself. If he can translate his collegiate production to the NFL level, Roseman’s aggressive pursuit may turn out to be one of the more underrated moves of the draft. As the Eagles prepare for the 2025 season, McCord’s development will be a storyline worth watching.
