It seems that everyone would love to see it happen, but it also looks like something somewhat far for now. David Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, has expressed a strong desire to arrange a bout between his charge and light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.
However, according to Lewkowicz, the fight currently seems far from becoming a reality. In a recent interview with BoxingScene, Lewkowicz addressed the rumors surrounding the potential matchup, stating, “I hope it becomes a reality, because we would love that fight.”
Lewkowicz revealed that an offer was sent to Bivol’s lawyer last Thursday. The proposal allows Bivol’s team to choose the month of the fight, with options ranging from September to December, and Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) would accommodate the selected date within that timeframe.
Reaching out to make it happen
Dmitry Bivol, promoted by Matchroom, has recently been active on Riyadh Season bills, including a bout against Malik Zinad and two fights with Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed title. Beterbiev won the first encounter by a narrow margin, but Bivol secured a decision victory in the rematch, becoming the first man to defeat Beterbiev.
David Benavidez, a rising star in the boxing world, boxes with PBC and was seen ringside in Saudi Arabia, scouting future opportunities. Despite the interest in a Benavidez-Bivol fight, it is understood that Riyadh Season organizers are more keen on a decider between Beterbiev and Bivol rather than having Bivol address his WBC mandatory, Benavidez. “I’ve sent an offer but I’ve not heard back,” said Lewkowicz. “There’s been no negotiations, just one letter.”
As the boxing community eagerly awaits further developments, the potential matchup between Benavidez and Bivol remains uncertain. Fans and analysts alike are keen to see if this highly anticipated fight will come to fruition or if it will remain just another rumor in the sport. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Benavidez and Bivol will finally meet in the ring, or if their paths will continue to diverge.
