Is Caitlin Clark the real MVP of the WNBA? Fans are outraged by latest pre-season list reveal

Caitlin Clark’s meteoric rise in the WNBA continues to be a topic of intense discussion, but ESPN’s latest preseason rankings have sparked debate among fans. Despite a record-breaking rookie season with the Indiana Fever, Clark landed at No. 4 on the list, trailing seasoned veterans A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and Breanna Stewart. While the ranking acknowledges her rapid ascent, many believe she deserves the top spot.

Clark’s debut campaign was nothing short of historic. Averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game, she earned All-Star honors, was named first-team All-WNBA, and even finished fourth in MVP voting after a dominant second-half push. ESPN’s Alexa Philippou praised her development, writing, “Clark dazzled as a rookie… finishing fourth in MVP voting.” Despite this, the panel ultimately favored experience when making its final decision.

Fans wasted no time voicing their frustration online. Many pointed to Clark’s influence beyond the stat sheet, citing sold-out arenas and record-breaking television ratings during Fever games. Some argued that she is the WNBA’s most valuable player in every sense, with one user declaring, “CC is the WNBA.” Others took aim at ESPN directly, claiming the network doesn’t follow the league closely enough.

A difference in opinion and it was not popular

However, ESPN’s panel-composed of Kendra Andrews, Kevin Pelton, Alexa Philippou, and Michael Voepel-stood firm in its ranking. The group weighed not only last season’s performances but also offseason activity, including exhibition games in the Unrivaled series. While Clark’s talent is undeniable, her status as a second-year player seemingly worked against her in comparison to more established stars.

Despite the debate, Clark remains focused on her game. The Fever, under new head coach Stephanie White, are preparing for the 2025 season opener on May 16, where Clark will have the chance to silence any remaining doubt about her place in the league. Whether she’s ranked No. 4 or No. 1, she remains the player to watch heading into the season.

As the action unfolds, Clark’s performance will be under the microscope. If she continues to elevate her game, she could soon leave little doubt about her standing atop the WNBA hierarchy. Fans will be watching closely, and this latest ranking only adds fuel to the conversation surrounding her ever-growing legacy.
