The Boston Red Sox continue building their roster and have reportedly added a significant power bat to strengthen their lineup – though they’re still awaiting more pieces to truly compete in a tight AL East division before eyeing the 2026 MLB playoffs.
The big addition is three-time MLB All-Star Willson Contreras, formerly of the St. Louis Cardinals, with his arrival to Boston confirmed by ESPN insider Jeff Passan.
What Willson Contreras Brings to the Red Sox
The veteran joins Boston after a strong 2025 MLB season playing primarily at first base. Prior to that role, Contreras established himself as an All-Star catcher with an impressive right-handed bat. Another major plus: his contract doesn’t put excessive strain on the Red Sox payroll.
According to MassLive.com reporter Chris Cotillo, Contreras’ impact on the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) will be $17.25 million – a manageable figure that has allowed Boston to make three major offseason trades: two solid starting pitchers and now an All-Star-caliber bat.
It’s fair to say the Red Sox offseason has been productive so far, but uncertainty remains around whether third baseman Alex Bregman will return. Cotillo provided an update on that front:
“MassLive first reported the Red Sox’s interest in Contreras earlier this month,” Cotillo wrote. “At the time, Boston was in talks with multiple teams about bats, including Houston’s Isaac Paredes, Arizona’s Ketel Marte, and Contreras’ teammate Brendan Donovan. With Contreras in tow, the Red Sox are expected to continue pursuing offense via MLB free agency and trade. The Red Sox remain engaged with third baseman Alex Bregman about a return to Boston.”
If Boston manages to re-sign Bregman, they would boast a strong Red Sox infield featuring Trevor Story, Marcelo Mayer, and either Triston Casas or Contreras at first base, with the other serving as designated hitter (DH).
Alternatively, Contreras could anchor first base while Casas rebuilds rhythm and confidence in Triple-A, with Masataka Yoshida as the primary DH. All of this would be backed by an explosive, athletic Red Sox outfield featuring Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Jarren Duran.
With these pieces in place, the Boston Red Sox could quickly become a team to watch in MLB and a legitimate threat in the American League.
