Inter Miami opens Club World Cup 2025 with goalless draw: Ustari saves the day, Messi comes close

Inter Miami’s debut in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup wasn’t what many had imagined. With Argentine legend Lionel Messi leading the team in a packed Hard Rock Stadium, the MLS side drew 0-0 with Al Ahly in a match where the scoreline didn’t tell the full story.

The real star wasn’t No. 10, but goalkeeper Óscar Ustari, whose crucial saves prevented a loss that could’ve shattered Miami’s World Cup hopes.

Ustari steals the spotlight with heroic saves

From the opening minutes, the Egyptian side came out aggressively, creating real danger in front of Miami’s goal. That’s when Ustari stepped up-calm, composed, and razor-sharp with his reflexes. The game-changing moment came when he saved a penalty from Trezeguet, pulling off a truly spectacular stop.

Messi sparkles, but the goal won’t come

Lionel Messi left his mark. His class was evident in every touch, pause, and attempt to break the deadlock. He came closest with a stunning free kick that rattled the post and a last-minute play that forced opposing goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy into a miraculous fingertip save that deflected the ball onto the crossbar.

The captain remained the creative heart of the team, orchestrating transitions, distributing the ball with elegance, and constantly looking to connect with his teammates. Yet, on this night, the ball refused to cross the line. Luis Suárez, meanwhile, had a quieter performance.

A draw that feels like a warning for Inter Miami

LAPRESSE

Tactically, Al Ahly pressed high and forced Inter Miami to play on the edge. In the second half, Gerardo Martino’s side improved its rhythm and attacking presence but still couldn’t find the net. The goalless draw leaves a bitter aftertaste.

Óscar Ustari was deservedly named Man of the Match. Without his saves-especially the penalty stop-this debut could have ended in disaster. International media praised him as the night’s savior.

With this result, Inter Miami earns its first point in Group A and will now face FC Porto in its next challenge. Al Ahly, meanwhile, takes on Palmeiras.

The Club World Cup journey is just beginning, but the warning is clear: no goals, no glory. And sometimes, the hero doesn’t wear the pink No. 10 jersey-but a pair of goalkeeper gloves.
