Inter Miami could sign former Lionel Messi teammate to address team’s biggest weakness

Inter Miami are once again active behind the scenes as preparations begin for the 2026 MLS season. Fresh off another title-winning campaign, the MLS champions are not standing still as they look for reinforcements.

Head coach Javier Mascherano is pushing for more additions, particularly in areas weakened by recent departures, as the club looks to sustain its dominance both domestically and internationally.

Despite boasting one of the most star-studded attacks in world football, including eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, it appears Inter Miami‘s leadership know that success in 2026 will depend on balance throughout the squad.

While the attacking core remains intact, defensive depth has emerged as a growing concern – and it is an area the club may look to solve by turning to a familiar name from Messi‘s international past.

Messi is confirmed to remain with the Herons for at least another year, alongside Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suarez. With that nucleus secured, attention has shifted toward reinforcing the back line.

According to reports from TNT Sports Argentina, Inter Miami have renewed their interest in veteran defender Marcos Rojo, a player with extensive experience at both club and international level.

Why Rojo fits Inter Miami’s plans

Rojo, now 35, currently plays for Racing Club in Argentina. His contract runs through June 2026, but his situation has sparked renewed speculation about a potential move to MLS.

This is not the first time the Florida franchise has explored the possibility. Back in 2023, respected journalist Gaston Edul reported that Inter Miami had already expressed interest in signing Rojo, signaling long-standing admiration for the defender.

The Argentine center-back joined Racing Club in August on a free transfer after four seasons with Boca Juniors. However, his time since arriving has been limited by availability and form.

Rojo has made just eight appearances across all competitions in 2025, with three in the Liga Profesional, one in the Copa Argentina, and four in the Copa Libertadores.

His stint with Boca also raised questions about durability. Over four years at the club, Rojo featured in just 13 matches, 12 in the Liga Profesional and one in the Copa Libertadores.

Experience over youth as Mascherano sets the tone

From Mascherano‘s perspective, the appeal of Rojo goes beyond recent minutes played.

The defender brings leadership, positional intelligence, and familiarity with elite-level football from his stints with Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon – qualities that align with Inter Miami‘s short-term ambitions.

Crucially, Rojo also shares a long-standing relationship with Messi from their time with the Argentina national team, a factor that has proven valuable in the club’s recruitment strategy.

Defensive instability has been one of the few vulnerabilities in an otherwise formidable Inter Miami side. Injuries, rotation, and departures have exposed a lack of experienced cover in central defense.

Adding a seasoned international like Rojo could help stabilize the back line while allowing younger players to develop without excessive pressure.
