Inside Netflix’s ‘Quarterback’: Biggest lessons from the second season of the hit series

The second season of Netflix’s Quarterback takes an in-depth look at the personal and professional lives of NFL quarterbacksJoe Burrow, Jared Goff, and Kirk Cousins.

Produced by Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, the show offers more than just on-field highlights-it reveals the challenges these athletes face both in their careers and in their personal lives. The series provides a candid portrayal of their struggles, frustrations, and growth.

One of the standout moments of the season is Joe Burrow’s journey with the Cincinnati Bengals. While Burrow had an exceptional season, the team around him faltered, leading to his visible frustration. By Week 3, after a loss to the Washington Commanders, he openly expressed how difficult it was to perform at such a high level and still come up short.

His frustration continued through the season, culminating in a heated exchange with head coach Zac Taylor after a Week 15 win over the Titans. These moments paint a picture of Burrow’s drive and determination but also the burden he shoulders in Cincinnati.

Kirk Cousins’ experience with the Atlanta Falcons took an unexpected turn when the team drafted a quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., in the first round.

This decision caught Cousins off guard, especially since he had left Minnesota under the impression that the Falcons weren’t targeting a quarterback. Despite feeling misled, Cousins had little room to complain-his lucrative four-year contract with Atlanta left him in a comfortable position.

However, the emotional toll of leaving Minnesota, where he had built strong bonds with teammates, became evident in his reflections throughout the season.

Jared Goff’s storyline focuses on his time with the Los Angeles Rams and the trade that sent him to Detroit. Despite his success with the Lions, Goff has never fully come to terms with the way the Rams handled his departure.

He admitted that the trade felt like a blindside, and while he’s found a new home in Detroit, the emotional scars of being cast aside remain. This lingering resentment highlights the personal aspect of an athlete’s career, where decisions made by others can leave lasting impressions.

Personal side of being an NFL QB

The series also delves into the personal lives of the quarterbacks. Burrow’s off-field interests, such as his unique fashion choices, provide a lighthearted contrast to the intense pressure of his job.

Meanwhile, Goff’s wife, Christen, offers a humorous perspective on the complexities of the game, admitting her struggles with understanding the playbook despite years of helping Jared memorize plays.

Kirk Cousins, known for his positivity, brings humor and heart to the show. His musical tastes, which range from singing Cher in the car to making 2Chainz the team’s theme song, showcase his lighthearted nature.

Yet, despite his cheerful demeanor, Cousins also struggles with personal challenges, including playing through injuries while fearing that taking time off could cost him his job.

As the season unfolds, we also get a glimpse of the athletes’ downtime. Both Burrow and Goff admit to struggling with boredom when not on the field. Whether it’s Burrow’s attempt to play the piano or Goff’s difficulty filling extra time during a playoff bye week, the series highlights the mental and emotional challenges these players face off the field.

Through these intimate moments, Quarterback reveals the complex lives of NFL quarterbacks, offering viewers a deeper understanding of the pressures and sacrifices that come with being at the top of their game.

The show emphasizes the human side of these athletes, making it clear that while they may be stars on the field, they are also individuals navigating the ups and downs of their personal lives.
