Bad news for the New York Yankees as they strive to regain their top form and secure a spot in the MLB postseason. Yankees reliever Jonathan Loáisiga will officially miss the remainder of the 2025 season due to a flexor strain, as reported by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. The silver lining for the Nicaraguan pitcher is that he will not require surgery.
Another pitcher lost… That makes three
Loáisiga, who had been on the injured list since early August due to a back injury, aggravated his condition with an elbow injury. What initially appeared to be a temporary setback has now been confirmed as the end of his season.
With this, the right-handed pitcher becomes the third Yankees pitcher sidelined for the rest of the year. The team had already lost Gerrit Cole, who underwent Tommy John surgery during Spring Training, and Clarke Schmidt, who met the same fate in July, leading to the rise of promising prospect Cam Schlittler. Reliever Jake Cousins, also undergoing Tommy John surgery, joins them.
Despite these setbacks, the Yankees‘ pitching rotation is showing signs of recovery. Schlittler has delivered strong performances, Max Fried appears to be overcoming his recent slump, and Luis Gil, after an uncertain return, is starting to perform at the level of his record. Carlos Rodón, meanwhile, continues to fulfill his role reliably.
In Loáisiga‘s case, his contribution was not particularly pivotal: he posted a 4.25 ERA in 30 games. Journalist Max Goodman (NJ.com) suggested that this injury could mark the end of his tenure with the Yankees.
Beyond the bullpen, concerns also extend to the offense. Aaron Judge remains limited by elbow discomfort and is unable to play in the outfield, while Giancarlo Stanton, despite his hot offensive streak, is primarily restricted to designated hitter duties.
Nevertheless, the Yankees remain optimistic that Judge can return to defending the outfield before the season concludes.
