Injured WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham claps back at hater with chilling warning: “FAFO”

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham clapped back hard at an online critic from the sidelines, proving that even a potentially serious knee injury won’t silence her. While awaiting news on her playing future, Cunningham took to X (formerly Twitter) to issue a stern warning to a user who targeted her sister with a vitriolic post.

The drama unfolded after Cunningham suffered a right knee injury during Sunday’s game. Her sister, Lindsey, posted a tweet criticizing the WNBA for its perceived failure to protect players.

In response, a social media user with the handle @sofarmary re-shared the post with a video of Sophie committing a flagrant foul, adding the caption, “‘Protect athletes,’ shut up bitch.”

A day later, Sophie fired back. “some of us were raised by the words of ‘don’t bite off more than you can chew,’ and some of us didn’t,” she tweeted, ending with the ominous acronym, “fafo” (fuck around and find out).

Injuries give Fever no respite

Cunningham’s sharp response is unsurprising for a player who has been fined multiple times this season for bluntly criticizing league officials. However, her focus on social media comes as the Fever and their fans hold their breath over her health.

The star guard went down clutching her knee in the second quarter of a bittersweet 99-93 victory over the Connecticut Sun-a game that saw teammate Kelsey Mitchell explode for 38 points.

The injury was a major blow to a team already reeling from the absence of key players, including Caitlin Clark, Aari McDonald, and Sidney Colson. With Cunningham serving as a pillar for the depleted roster, her potential loss threatens to derail Indiana’s playoff hopes.

Sophie never backs down

While the Fever has yet to release an official update following a scheduled MRI on Monday, some experts fear a season-ending ACL injury.

Despite the grim outlook, some eagle-eyed fans found a glimmer of hope in an upbeat Instagram story Cunningham posted after the injury, suggesting her spirits remain high. For now, while the league awaits an official diagnosis, one thing is clear: on or off the court, Sophie Cunningham is not backing down.
