Indiana Fever overcome Caitlin Clark’s injury and secure WNBA playoff spot

Injuries can change the course of any season… and they certainly did in 2025 for the Indiana Fever. With star Caitlin Clark sidelined due to a groin injury that ended her year, the team suffered up to four additional absences among key players. Even so, they managed to regroup and fight their way to the playoffs.

To stay competitive, the Fever signed players to seven-day contracts – Odyssey Sims, Aerial Powers, and Shey Peddy – while navigating a true injury plague. The arrival of these veterans helped stabilize the team during critical moments, and eventually, each earned a contract for the remainder of the season to compete in the postseason.

Indiana Fever and their immediate impact

The plan worked. Thanks to Natasha Howard’s contribution in the paint (17 pts) and Peddy’s accuracy (13 pts on 5-for-5 shooting), the Fever crushed the Washington Mystics 94-65 on September 7, securing their spot in the WNBA playoffs.

Despite losing Clark – who averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5 rebounds in just 13 games before the injury – and suffering prolonged absences from Sophie Cunningham, Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald, and Chloe Bibby, Indiana showed character and adaptability to remain among the league’s top eight teams.

Indiana Fever have experience and youth

With a mix of youth and experience, the Fever head into the postseason with high morale and the confidence that, even without their biggest star, they have the pieces to compete. The presence of veterans like Odyssey Sims, Aerial Powers, and Shey Peddy has given the locker room a leadership voice in key moments, while the younger players maintain the energy and hunger to make an impact.

That combination has allowed Indiana not only to survive adversity but to grow stronger with each obstacle overcome. The message is clear: even though Caitlin Clark isn’t on the court, the team hasn’t lost its ambition and is ready to prove it can be a tough opponent for anyone in the fight for the WNBA title.
