The WNBA preseason tipped off with intensity on Saturday as the Indiana Fever defeated the Washington Mystics 79-74 in overtime. While the scoreboard told one story, the on-court physicality and heated exchanges revealed just how seriously both teams are taking the upcoming 2025 season.
What began as a routine preseason matchup quickly turned combative, with Fever guard Sophie Cunningham finding herself at the center of multiple tense moments.
Cunningham’s fire ignites the Fever
In the second half, Cunningham collided with Mystics rookie Kiki Iriafen while battling for a defensive rebound. The veteran was sent sprawling to the hardwood and quickly confronted Iriafen face-to-face.
Fever teammate Lexie Hull stepped in to de-escalate the situation, while Mystics guard Morgan Jones consoled the rookie, who turned away with a calm smile. Iriafen was issued a Flagrant 1 foul for the play.
That wasn’t the only flashpoint. Cunningham again found herself on the ground after being held and shoved by Brittney Sykes while trying to get open for a pass. Fever veteran DeWanna Bonner immediately responded, bringing intensity and backing her teammate.
Despite the physical play, Cunningham remained composed and contributed to her team’s gritty win. Head coach Stephanie White lauded her guard’s leadership and relentless energy.
“Sophie’s a dawg,” White said via Indy Star.
“She’s a competitor. She’s versatile. She plays with such toughness. She’s huge for us-whether on the floor or on the sideline, she brings a level of energy that elevates everyone.”
The game ultimately came down to composure in overtime, where the Fever executed just enough to seal the win. The victory, although not counting in the standings, showcased Indiana’s readiness to compete with edge and focus.
For the Mystics, the game served as a declaration that they won’t be pushed around this year. Though they struggled during the 2024 campaign, Saturday’s physicality and resilience signaled a change in tone under a new-look roster.
