In Egypt, Salah is being urged not to play in MLS: “No one will remember him; I don’t remember Messi”

The news of Mohamed Salah’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season has taken soccer fans by surprise. However, the Egyptian star has not revealed where he will go next, and there is a lot of speculation about it.

Although many teams have expressed interest in the Premier League forward, “Mo” has received a stern warning about signing with Major League Soccer.

Warning for Salah about joining MLS

The truth is that signing the 33-year-old forward is a dream for several franchises, so he won’t lack options when he becomes a free agent and terminates his contract with the Reds.

Major League Soccer is one of the possible paths Mohamed could take. The commissioner of the American league, Don Garber, has already expressed his interest and stated that he would love to see him there, though it’s not certain he’ll join an MLS team.

However, the sporting director of the Egyptian national team, Ibrahim Hassan, has warned the soccer star about this and does not recommend it:

“Personally, I’d prefer him to stay in Europe,” Hassan told On Sports. “I’ve heard about offers from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and clubs in the Italian league. A move to Major League Soccer? He’d be too far from the spotlight. Nobody will remember Salah anymore, just like I don’t remember [Lionel] Messi; I don’t even try to watch him play,” he warned (via The Guardian).

The Argentine signed with Inter Miami in 2023 following a successful stint with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. There, he won four titles: the Leagues Cup (2023), the Supporters’ Shield (2024), the 2025 Eastern Conference Championship, and the MLS Cup that same year. In addition, he became the team’s leading scorer and reached 900 career goals in a match against Nashville (he now has 901).

However, for Hassan, this doesn’t seem to be enough, and he suggested other options: “If he doesn’t receive offers from Europe, a move to the Saudi league would be a good option, especially with big names like Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Meanwhile, Salah has not yet revealed where he will go next after leaving the team with which he won two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Currently, Salah is sidelined from Egypt’s friendly camp after suffering a minor muscle injury in the Champions League victory over Galatasaray. He missed Friday’s match against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, which ended in a 4-0 win for his team. Now, the team will face Spain on Tuesday, March 31, at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona.

The seven-time African champions will compete in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Iran at the World Cup. They will play their opening match on June 15 against Belgium at Lumen Field in Seattle. They will face New Zealand on the 22nd and Iran on the 27th.
