Imane Khelif asked to return Olympic boxing medal: IBA explodes against Thomas Bach

Olympic peace is far from being established in the ring. Less than a month after the curtain came down on Paris 2024, the International Boxing Association (IBA) has unleashed a storm that threatens to tarnish one of the most talked-about women’s podiums of the tournament: the one headed by Algeria’s Imane Khelif. The reason? A tangle of medical tests, contradictory decisions and direct accusations against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its former president, Thomas Bach.

Umar Kremlev, the current head of the IBA, did not hold back. In a conference that seemed more like a counterattack in the middle of an institutional war, he accused the IOC of allowing Khelif’s participation even though she had previously been banned by his organization after failing two medical eligibility tests. According to him, the boxer’s path to Olympic gold should not have been allowed.

Imane Khelif, the controversy that started at Paris 2024

Khelif made headlines long before she stepped onto the podium. In 2022, amid growing suspicions expressed by other athletes, the IBA decided to apply blood tests to several competitors, including the Algerian. The results, Kremlev explained, showed “abnormal” parameters. Despite this, and recognizing that it was uncharted territory for the federation, they decided to repeat the tests months later. The verdict was the same: she was not fit to compete under the standards set by the IBA.

The surprise for the organization came when the IOC, ignoring these reports, opened the door for Khelif to participate in the Paris 2024 Games. Not only that, she won gold. A result that, for Kremlev, should be annulled. “Every athlete who suffered because of this decision should be financially compensated,” he said, referring to the boxers who were left out or eliminated by Khelif during the tournament.

The dispute between the IOC and the IBA

The IBA president’s speech was not limited to the athlete. In his speech, he pointed directly at Thomas Bach, accusing him of having promoted an agenda that weakened the authority of international federations in favor of the IOC. “This is not sporting justice, it is institutional manipulation,” he said.

Meanwhile, neither the IOC nor Khelif herself have publicly responded to these accusations. The possibility of her medal being taken away is on the table, but the conflict promises more chapters. The political ring of Olympic sport is just beginning to heat up.
