“If my children win, I’ll come back”: Julio Cesar Chavez and the promise that thrills Mexican boxing

The great Mexican champion, Julio Cesar Chavez, is remembered as one of the most successful athletes of recent times. His outstanding 25-year career officially came to an end on September 17, 2005, at the age of 43, after a fight against Grover Wiley in Phoenix, Arizona, where he lost by technical knockout. From 1980 to 2005, he had a record of 107 wins, six losses and two draws. Since then, it has been missed to see the Sinaloa native in the ring.

On several occasions, a possible return has been raised, where in the words of the “Cesar del Boxeo” he has opened that possibility, but under certain conditions: that his sons are victorious in their upcoming commitments. After several problems around the Chavez family (battles against addictions, scandals with the law and social problems) the former world champion was encouraged to point out that he will return to activity as long as his children triumph this Saturday in San Luis Potosi.

Who will Julio Cesar Chavez’s sons fight against?

Seven months after the embarrassment of Julio Jr against Jake Paul, the son of the legend will return to action this weekend to face Argentine Angel Julian Sacco in the super middleweight division with no title at stake at the new Arena Potosi in the city of San Luis Potosi. The objective of this fight is to demonstrate that he has the ability to prolong a career that has been in decline and to remain within professionalism.

At 39 years of age, “Julito” has a record of 57 wins (34 KOs), seven losses and one draw, so he will have to be dominant and prove that what he did in his last fight was just a bad night. However, from that date he had a downfall when he was arrested by the ICE Agency for irregularities with his residence in the United States and for falsifying official documentation. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has insisted on his desire to get away from his father’s figure, but given the problems he has faced in recent months, it will be under his mantle that he will have a new professional encounter.

Omar Chavez will also fight on the same card in San Luis Potosi, who also went through problems in recent months to the point of being admitted to his father’s clinic for a gambling addiction. In early 2026, he will have the opportunity to face Colombian Jose Miguel Torres in a non-title fight. In his case, he is resuming his career after a year of inactivity and after losing to Missael Rodriguez in a controversial fight that was celebrated just a year ago.

The unfulfilled wish of Julio Cesar Chavez

The Mexican champion is willing to put on the gloves once again and star in an exhibition bout. However, his dream is not entirely to return to the ring and throw his famous hooks to the liver at his opponents. His greatest desire is to share the card with Omar and Julio Cesar. He even pointed out that he would do it in San Luis Potosi, in the same venue where his sons will be active this weekend and if they win their respective fights it will be in the same venue where we would see the “Chavez Trilogy”.

I get a lump in my throat, but I’m going to tell you honestly, I had that illusion, I wanted to do my last exhibition with them and I was even about to do the exhibition here in San Luis Potosi. If they both get ahead, I promise I’m going to do an exhibition with my children here.

The great boxing champion also trusts that “Julito” will get off the wrong path of drugs and with discipline he will be able to get ahead. Meanwhile, Omar must heal his gambling addiction and after the fight in San Luis Potosi he will be admitted again to the addiction clinic.
