If Brian Daboll wants to remain head coach of the Giants, he has a lot riding on the development of Jaxson Dart

The New York Giants have struggled for years, dating back to the latter part of Eli Manning’s career. While he delivered two Super Bowl titles-both against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, the franchise’s golden age ended as his performance declined approaching retirement.

Since Eli’s departure, the Giants have faced significant instability at the quarterback position. Although they’ve had brief moments of resurgence, the 2024 season was nothing short of dismal: a 3-14 record that left fans frustrated and analysts questioning the future. That disappointing performance has many experts believing Brian Daboll’s job could be in jeopardy if things don’t turn around in 2025.

What Daboll needs to do to stay in charge

In previous seasons, Brian Daboll never had the chance to mold a quarterback of his own choosing. He inherited Daniel Jones, and the results were far from what the franchise had hoped for. Jones’ inconsistency kept the team from succeeding-not only in the NFC East but across the league as a whole.

Now, with the 2025 first-round selection of Jaxson Dart, Daboll finally has the opportunity to shape a quarterback in his vision. He’ll work closely with the rookie to teach him the offensive system, complement him with aerial and ground weapons, and hopefully improve on last year’s losing campaign.

Backing Dart will be a veteran presence who knows what it takes to win a Super Bowl-Russell Wilson. After a tumultuous stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson arrives in New York looking to contribute and mentor the young quarterback.

Daboll took over as head coach in 2022 and was named NFL Coach of the Year for leading the Giants to the divisional round of the playoffs. But since then, the team hasn’t returned to the postseason-and while not all of the blame lies on Daboll, the pressure is mounting.

Daniel Jones never became the franchise QB the team needed

Daboll didn’t select Daniel Jones, but he attempted to develop him. However, as recent history shows, that effort fell short. Jones was ultimately released, closing a chapter of unfulfilled promise.

On the positive side, Daboll successfully developed wide receiver Malik Nabers, who emerged as one of the league’s most dynamic offensive threats in his rookie season.

Today, Daboll has built a compelling roster. In addition to Nabers, he can count on standout defender Dexter Lawrence II, and now has Jaxson Dart leading the offense-a combination that could spark a much-needed turnaround.

But the path won’t be easy. The NFC East is one of the league’s most competitive divisions. The reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles remain formidable, the Washington Commanders surprised everyone last season under coach Dan Quinn and young quarterback Jayden Daniels, and then there are the Dallas Cowboys, once again entering the year with sky-high expectations. Just like every other year.
