Ice Cube must suffer Shedeur Sanders after hoping he’d join the Raiders to change its sorry history

Ice Cube spent months imagining Shedeur Sanders in a Raiders uniform, a franchise saviour who might finally rewrite the team’s turbulent quarterback history.

Instead, Sanders slipped through the first round, then the second and third, and eventually fell all the way to the Cleveland Browns in the fifth.

Now, after an anxious debut that exposed just how far the rookie must go, the rap icon and lifelong Raiders fan is left reflecting on what could have been, and perhaps what was avoided.

Appearing on The Skip Bayless Show, Ice Cube admitted that he hoped the Raiders would take a swing on Sanders, especially given the quarterback’s relationship with minority owner Tom Brady.

Yet when the draft unfolded, Las Vegas chose to stay away entirely, selecting Tommy Mellot and Cam Miller instead. The Raiders fan base was baffled at the time. Ice Cube himself said he was disappointed, but he offered a theory that resonated across the league.

“I wanted him, but I understand,” he said. “If you take him and things don’t go right for a season or two, Deion is getting your job. Coaches didn’t want to draft their replacement.”

He was not alone in that belief. Multiple teams reportedly feared the pressure that would come with selecting the son of Deion Sanders, a global sports figure whose presence can overshadow entire organisations. The slide that followed was more dramatic than anyone predicted.

Raiders defended at last after Sanders’ shaky start in Cleveland

Sanders‘ arrival in Cleveland was supposed to be fresh opportunity, but the quarterback room he joined was unusually crowded.

Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco, Deshaun Watson, and Kenny Pickett all stood ahead of him at various points, limiting his chances for first team reps. He spent the season’s first five weeks as an emergency option and remained largely unknown to his own offence.

That changed in Week 11 when Gabriel exited against the Ravens with a concussion. Sanders finally jogged onto the field to loud cheers from fans who had been waiting to see him. Moments later, the reality of the NFL hit him with full force.

His first drive ended in a sack and fumble after a blitz he never saw coming. His second ended with an interception by Nate Wiggins.

His third included another sack after Kyle Hamilton nearly had a pick himself. Sanders threw only four completions on sixteen attempts for forty seven yards. The Browns lost 23 to 16 and never scored again after he entered.

There was at least one bright moment, and it came after the final whistle. Ravens rookie LaJohntay Wester, Sanders‘ former Colorado teammate, walked across the field to console him, offering a quiet moment of support as cameras closed in.

Browns turn to Sanders again with the Raiders waiting on deck

Despite the rough debut, Sanders will start this weekend in Las Vegas while Gabriel remains in concussion protocol. It creates an unexpected storyline.

The quarterback the Raiders passed on, possibly out of fear of the attention that would follow him, will face them at Allegiant Stadium with a roster that has been searching for consistency all season.

Cleveland‘s passing offence ranks last in the league in yards, efficiency, and separation. Sanders steps into an environment that has tested every quarterback who has lined up behind center for the Browns this year.

For the first time, he gets a full week of work with the starters, something he barely tasted before making his debut. As Ice Cube watches from afar, the Raiders‘ restraint suddenly looks less curious.

Sanders still carries enormous potential, but his introduction to the league was a reminder that promise and production are rarely aligned in week one.

Sunday offers him a chance to reset the narrative. It offers the Raiders a chance to confirm they were right.

And for Ice Cube, it is another chapter in a Raiders saga that never seems to unfold the way he expects.
